... Beach. As Doug says, every beach town has a long pier where people stroll, watch the beach goers or surfers and of course the fishermen. We walked to the end and met a young man " fishing" but as he admitted he didn't catch much but met lots of interesting people and had interesting conversations. ... from the Colorado. We could see down to Palm Springs and up to a large sea there.
In Joshua Tree NP we walkedto a few of the rocky outcrops. It was up to 38C (100F) but because of the low humidity it really didn't seem that bad. Once we got back into LA I really noticed the difference though. As we neared the edge of LA there was a massive area of wind turbines as well as a stretch of solar panels.

... Hidden Valley Campground is within the park boundaries itself and therefore run by the National Parks Service. Naturally it doesn't have any water or electricity supply, so the restrooms there are little more than a bog over a long drop. I guess it's nice to feel the breeze whilst you're doing your thing...
