... Oklahoma. The first thing I noticed was the accents had completely changed from what it was in Missouri. The second was a huge LED sign giving a warning 'Danger, possibility of flooding from 1 am 5/09 to 12 pm 5/12' Oh yea, that's all I need more rain. One of the photo's I am attaching is very dark as I took it inside of the store Bass Pro Shops in Springfield MO. As you can see there are life fish in the water - huge live fish and there was even ducks swimming on the water ...
Miami, Oklahoma, United States muggeragem... the severe weather forecasted this morning either went north of us or never happend. We had clear skies all day, which means a bit of sunburn in new places (the back of my hand for instance). Wind is still tough but did die down a little, gas mileage improved. Out of Springfield. MO we finally hit Rt 66 for real this time. Came about 50 miles into Joplin for the night. more tomorrow.
Joplin, Missouri, United States 7x70on66... looks like a flat, ugly rock, but it's on purpose -- it's a Green building. See http://www.wildcatglades.audubon.org/gr eentechnology.html for details. They offer classes, a few natives in tanks, and a little gift shop. It was COLD, but I zipped up my jacket and roamed around the trails for 3 miles or so. I startled a blue heron on the bank below, but was able to use the zoom to catch it on the opposite bank. I can't ...
Joplin, Missouri, United States marijkaWe stopped for dinner around 7:00. We watched Hitch on the bus and got the YMCA around 10:30. We had a short orientation and then did activities with our bus. We all wrote out manes on a piece of paper and drew a picture of ourselves. We passed the papers in a circle and wrote what we thing described them. I was happy to spend some last time with our bus. I have missed that the ...
Joplin, Missouri, United States lizr88Greetings from Miami, Oklahoma! We're in the *other* Miami! It is pronounced my-am-muh. This Miami is an old Route 66 town that has embraced the revival of Route 66. Lots of neon on the strip. Once of the showplaces in town is the renovated Coleman Theatre. Part of today was spent pen and inkwell hunting for YOU! And I'm pleased to ...
Miami, Oklahoma, United States pendemonium... in it's entirety from west to east before, it's amazing how the perspective changes driving it east to west, saw things we didn't remember from previous trips. We did a lot of criss crossing of I-44 in order to stay on Route 66 and off of the interstate, passing through Phillipsburg, Conway, Sampson, Niangua, Marshfield and we Blew thru Plew! Honest, Plew was the town name! As we neared Springfield, we ...
Joplin, Missouri, United States pendemonium... I saw today. Right next to Route 44 or the Will Rogers Turnpike is what most oklahomiains call the free road. Now to most people this is just a standard two lane road. It's not divided or anything. But between cities the speed limit is 65. And its almost all passing zones except where there is a "hill". The other things is that I need to do laundry. I have one more clean pair of socks. Well technically I have three clean socks. Don't ask I ...
Vinita, Oklahoma, United States marvs66trip... little Prius held steady at 75. I paid my toll and exited for Vinita a couple of miles later, where I got half of my toll refunded to me. My hotel was right off of the interstate so I checked in and then drove around. I ate Chinese at a restaurant that doesn't take credit cards; it was almost a problem. She cleaned out every bit of change I had. I returned to my hotel and prepared for the customer meeting on Wednesday.
Vinita, Oklahoma, United States worthj1970All in all one can consider the day a success as we drove through the whole of Missouri, little corner of Kansas (the Route 66 runs for 13 miles in Kansas :)) and made it by nightfall to a motel in smallish Vinita, Oklahoma. The place was SUPERB! For the three of us we got for 40 bucks a classical motel room and a ...
Vinita, Oklahoma, United States life74We have a little bit difficult situation on our hands. As of today we have exactly one week to get to LA and thus can't spend very much time on trying to find the sights. The route runs along the modern-day highway in these parts, but here and there makes some sudden turns and vanishes. Even we went in the wrong direction for about half an hour and then another half hour back to the point where we got lost.
