... as much as we thought it would, it's still been nice to rest and get some laundry done. I bought a new, larger tarp for my hammock and sent my old one home. Tomorrow we have an early morning shuttle lined up to the same gap and plan on hiking another 13 miles. Thankfully the terrain seems like it will be pretty good, no huge changes in elevation, just the normal ups and downs.
Day 1: 9.5 miles, Springer Mountain to somewhere near Horse Gap
... called Mountain Crossing that sells pizza and coffee so I quickly changed my mind. I ended up staying here in the hostel, it's supposed to pour tonight so I couldn't pass up the opportunity for a dry bed. Planning on doing about 11 miles tomorrow, it's supposed to rain and snow tomorrow so we will see if I'm able to make it to Low Gap ...
... I woke up at Stover around 7 and was able to get moving by 8:30. The day started off gold and wet, but the sun came out in the afternoon and it turned out to be an awesome day. I hiked a total of around 13 miles on Tuesday, and they were tough. The tallest mountain of the day was Sassafras which included a 600 foot climb followed by another mountain. Needless to say by the time I got to Gooch Shelter I was exhausted. I have never in my life been happier eating ...
After a small pit stop at a health clinic in Birmingham, and fighting our way through stand-still traffic through Atlanta, we are finally here! Spent Thanksgiving here. On Thanksgiving day we ate a buffet at Western Sizzler with 18 workers etc. from the campground, then on saturday the campground provided turkeys and everyone brought covered dishes and we all ate at the clubhouse.
