... village to see the women who are known for "walking marriage"). I don't remember much as I felt like poo.
Eric got up early the next day and bought us tickets for yanyuan. He had wanted to buy tickets to muli but they were sold out. So around 6 or 7 we got up and headed to the bus station. I was feeling mostly better. Yanyuan I wasn't impressed by but we weren't there for all that long. We were just ...

There is a large amount Yi people, an ethnic minority, who still dress in there traditional clothes here...really amazing colours with beautiful embroidery...even the clothes they wear just to work in the fields look amazing to me. We ambled down the market yesterday and got a lot of stares....I mean a serious amount! Some people here have never seen a white ...

Xichang, Sichuan, China nickmofry... the mob. It was ridiculous how many people were there or trying to get there. To me it was just another temple, but to Caitlin it was her first one. I just chilled on a bench while she looked around. One thing I've noticed is that a lot of the temples look the same, so I took that well needed break. I ended up talking to a women who wanted her daughter to be our american pen-pals. We walked down the mountain (oh yeah, the temple was on a mountain) stopping at a ...
Xichang, Sichuan, China bambblesFunny how stereotypes, a guidebook, and tourism information create something which in reality isn't there: In this little Chinese town, the women are the property owners and decision-makers, while the men labour in the background. Soon after setting foot in the ancient town of Lijiang, on a high plateau in mountainous northwest Yunnan province, you will likely come across a large water-wheel and hear ethnic tunes, then catch sight of a group of dancers dancing in the middle of ...
Lugu, Tibet, China happysheepGone are the days when it took two days hard travel to get to Lugu lake bordering Sichuan and Yunnan. There are plans now to build an airport, with money from Taiwan investors, to make it easier to get into the Mosuo kingdom . . . One of the biggest tourism destinations in Yunnan without an airport has just jumped into the queue. The Yunnan Civil Aviation Bureau announced that construction will begin next year on Lijiang Lugu Lake Airport, according to a Kunming Daily ...
Lugu, Tibet, China happysheep... civil affairs official Wednesday said reconstruction could begin only in the middle of this month, giving little time before winter sets in. Pang Chenmin, deputy director of the Ministry of Civil Affairs' disaster relief department, said: "We face a tight schedule to beat the winter cold." The 6.1-magnitude quake rocked the mountainous Sichuan-Yunnan border region on August 30, killing 38 people and injuring 982. The epicenter of the ...
Xichang, Sichuan, China happysheep... Yunnan border, the China Earthquake Administration (CEA) said. Kunming, provincial capital of Yunnan, too has suffered some damage. The quake was followed by a 5.6-magnitude aftershock Sunday, but there were no reports of further damage. Altogether, 656 schools have been damaged, and heavy rain, difficult terrain and disruptions in mobile telephone communications are hampering rescue efforts, officials said. The injured are being treated in ...
Xichang, Sichuan, China happysheep... It made for some nice pictures! The monkeys could be pretty aggressive. One grabbed half a candy bar right out of my coat pocket.....Crazy monkey. Another saw a group of locals walking up the path and snuck up behind taking a swipe at their plastic bags which burst open. Apparently they've used this strategy before because before you could say 'Curious George' there were monkeys scrambling to grab whatever they could. The Chinese were ...
XiChang, China samgowest... if we know someone in the business, we usually try to patronize them. So when everything here turns "Western" and hierarchical and capitalistic, the whole system will change. I'd say the biggest difference between "old" and "new" China are the businesses- you still see here very small, independent hole-in-the-wall places, literally, usually family-run, whose entire livelihood is that business. I guess I'm wondering what the effect on society will be in the switch from ...
