Sand Dunes, Swimming Pools and Nothing but Seafood

... the locals fish in the rough waters in the little bowls with one orr waving back and forth!
The place we stayed at was really nice, clean and cheap. There was a swimming pool and a lot of travellers there.
The best part of Mui Ne, bar none, was renting a scooter and heading for the Red Sand Dunes, which are the same ones as the Windows XP screen saver! There were of course many, many childrens following us ...

Leaving Saigon for the beaches

... took ages as the road was one long traffic jam for many miles. I got to Phan Thiet and saw the coulorful fishing boats in the harbour. Mui Ne was a few kms furthere on and very soon we were driving along a beautiful shoreline.

The place I booked was nice but there was no sandy beach outside, only a concrete slope to the water. Decided to go elsewhere. I was ...

... just a little neglected. Our bungalow’s balcony sold it for us though, overhanging the beach. With much excitement we headed in for a swim, a short while after we realised we were both itching all over! We don’t know if it was some strange sea creatures or just polluted waters. All the same we decided to stay on dry land and watch all the watersports in the bay instead. I think its safe to say this is place is in no way the real Vietnam, not our cup of tea at all. Next stop Saigon!

Mui Ne - one long beach! with a lot to see!

... man away while other ladies seemed to be joining in. "It must be about either sex or money" I said jokingly to the Brazilian couple sat next to us, secretly hoping it was about money as the man looked old enough to be the girl's farther.
But as the man stumbled past us I realized it could be about something completely different. He absolutely stank of cheap whiskey and could barely walk straight. 'Had he ran someone over while drunk?!' we wondered ...

Crossing the divide between North and South

... was simply out of this world. It’s the perfect metaphor for Vietnam. You could see the coast, the mountains, development with the expansive bridge and then the all the little old fishing boats at the same time. It was beautiful and oh so hot.
When we eventually got to Hue and waited for the heat to subside we busied our selves as I mentioned in the last blog with watching Disney movies and just generally recovering from the stress of the last few tailor filled days. We headed ...

... red and white sandunes so off we went... They're a bit surreal but really pretty! It sounds really daft but it's very hot and all you can see is sand so you feel like you've been transported to the desert. You can toboggan down the dunes but we decided against that as it looked a bit rubbish... Plus, you get tonnes of hassle from the kids renting out the toboggans. We got some great pics of the sandunes though.
The Tour to "Hell on Earth"

... little boys today with a metal detector looking for something to sell. Where bases once were located now there are markets. For example, we saw a sign for Camp Carroll but all that remains is a pile of rocks to mark the spot of former base. On the road to the former Khe Sanh military base we made a couple of stops. First, the Rockpile – which now looks like a normal mountain covered in trees. It was used by ...

Properly seeing the effects of the "American" war

... he was born in the tunnels and insisted that he give us a guided tour (and provided flash lights). So after a very speedy tour of the museum, we were given an even speedier tour of the tunnels! Our tour guide was very enthusiastic about showing us the tunnels... But it was fascinating as he spent the first few years of his life in these dark, damp tunnels.

The Vinh Moc tunnels are found near the Ben Hai river which is the area where the ...

We sat on the beach awhile watching this process completely at least twice.
We now head for the White Sand Dunes outside of town. We were lost after driving along the coast, in and out of several villages before we decide to turn around. Now it is very windy and ...
