Happy Veterans Day from Japan! We were super excited to have a weekday off that was not also a Japanese holiday or pouring rain. The top 3 recommended day trips from Tokyo are Kamakura (~15 minutes from our house), Nikko (last month's big excursion) and Hakone, today's destination. The most recommended one day outing in Hakone is the scenic loop around the area using a train, cable car, boat, and ropeway gondola. This is the best way to see a pretty vast area in one ...

I think there is something edible in there

This morning we head off to Hakone, about 80 min train ride away from Tokyo, to stay in a traditional Japanese inn (ryokan). Hakone is located in Japan's Fuji National Park known for hot spring resorts and Mt Fuji views. At least we are told there are good views of Mt Fuji, not that it ever made an appearance for us. I ended up with cold soba noodles topped with fried shrimp, greens and onions all served cold. ...

... girls go to the shrine to receive a blessing and then boys go again at age 5 and girls at age 7. They were rather cute! From there we went on to the Japanese art gallery which had magnificent views of Lake Ashi and Mt Fuji. Next step was the trip across the lake in a pirate ship - Jonny Depp could have been on board. From there it was back down to our accommodation. This is quite an experience. It's a large hotel and shoes are removed at the front door and put into lockers. Many ...

Fish & Fuji

Really, this blog is about much more than just fish and Fuji. It's been a busy week: read on for stories of panda bears, stately forests, ancient temples, sumo wrestlers, lots of rain, confusing trains, and, yes, big fish and a big mountain.

Last Saturday was a day to visit the Ueno Zoo, not far from where we were staying in Tokyo. One of the main attractions for us here was the chance to see panda bears, something we haven’t had ...
