We thought we were pretty good at catching trains. This morning we managed to catch the wrong one which set us back a couple of hours. Quite a few train changes required in our trip to the Izu peninsula which is (normally) a couple of hours south of Tokyo. We packed up our gear and I'm glad we took the approach of having a base for a week and doing day trips, rather than packing up an switching accommodation every day or two. We started the day visiting a traditional Japanese woodworking factory and had a demonstration of how different types of wood are glued together and then cut paper thin with what must be an extraordinarily sharp plane. He claims he can cut a hundred slices from a 4 inch piece. They can also make ultra delicate inlay pictures. He also make ...

Waking up to another beautiful day and have the breakfast buffet in the large restaurant overlooking the hotel gardens. It's a mixture of Japanese and Western food, however, we just can't stomach a Japanese breakfast with fish. Luckily there are croissants, cereals, yoghurt and fruits as well. We want to go to Perry Road in Shimoda and after checking out that's where we are heading. Perry Road is a pedestrian road and hard to find. We follow one sign and then no more signs after ...
