Cambodia, like Disneyland, but better.

... to say the least.

The Stupa is a major tourist attraction and with that comes children and deformed people begging for money, naked children carrying naked babies on their hips, and gangs of street children running around begging for anything anyone will give them. It’s always tough to see, and it’s hard not to give them anything. It’s taught not to give money, bc it just keeps them on the street longer as it pays their owner or parents and gives ...

Summary of the past weeks

... the Thai-Lao border, where we boarded a slow boat that would take us, after two days 'cruising the Mekong' to Luang Prabang, a pretty and cozy little town by the river. There we decided to rise our standard for two nights and stayed in a beautiful hotel, with river views and all facilities (including a bath). Really worth it!

After Luang Prabang we got a bus south towards the backpaker paradise of Vang Vieng, where loud cafes and swimming down the ...

Of course we had to visit Swensons Icecream before leaving Sorya Shops & have one of the best icecreams in the world

Killing Fields and amazing sunsets

... Bangkok, the buildings and layout are practically mirror images.

As in Siem Reap, you don't have to cover your shoulders but you do have to take your shoes off to enter. There were quite a few buildings that are closed to the public though it's still definitely worth checking out. I loved seeing all the jeweled ornaments and Buddha statues on display. The Silver Pagoda was beautiful even if the majority of it was covered up.

The journey to Phnom Penh

... every stop there after we anxiously watched our luggage to check that nobody took it. After about an hour the air conditioning broke and to make it worse we had to listen to screeching Cambodian singing on the TV. Because of the heat they opened up the back door which was also the door to the cargo so we went down to check my bag wouldn't fall out. Later, after many moments of turning back to ...

Elephants and temples, (but mostly elephants).

... Brilliant, although he didn’t think so, he didn’t buy any.

2nd – 6th August:

Our first couple of days in Siem Reap were spent wandering around exploring the town. To be honest there wasn’t a lot to be discovered but there wasn’t much else to do. Nearby are the Temples of Angkor Wat, trips here can be for 1, 3 or 5 days. We decided 1 day would be plenty for us. We set off around 8, we didn’t ...

The Killing Fields

... murdered by being hung by their feet and swung against it until they were dead. There were once windowless buildings where people were held for days on end, just waiting to be killed, because the amount of people coming through were too great. All in all, more than a quarter of the population of Cambodia was killed during this period. Everyone in Cambodia today has relatives or friends who were murdered.

The ride back to civilization (sort of )

... that went down the mountain side. It was a bit of a trek and pretty muddy so we had to hold onto branches of bamboo and kind of repel backwards down the mountain to get to the bottom.

The view was pretty amazing from the bottom of the fall. Gettting back up the mountain was another feat to tackle. I felt pretty good about depending on the bamboo after seeing how hard he elephant had to pull on it the day before and the strength it took for one to come out of the ground ...

S-21, the secret weapon of the Khmer Rouge

  • First floor; wooden cubicles of roughly the same dimensions.
  • Second floor; prisoners were simply chained together in mass numbers on the floor.
  • The west wing and final building was used to house additional prisoners and to also carry out interrogations and torture. At ...
