A little piece of paradise. In the rain.

After two tough days of travel, primarily in the rain, I was convinced that I would wake up on Thursday morning on a tropical island on a beautiful sunny day, and pass all the time laying on the beach. Unfortunately, when I woke up, it was pouring down rain :)

Little Corn Island, as it turns out, is absolutely beautiful. The beaches on the far side of the island, while not as deep or as long as some others we've seen, have fine white sand, palm trees, and very very few people. There ar...

... push it away. Meanwhile, I can hear Rikki laughing hysterically through his snorkel and not doing a thing to help me! Eventually the little guy swam away and attached himself to a big parrot fish. We had a few spots we liked to go to. The cheapest comedor on the island was called Alfonzo's and had good plates of food for about $5. We went there pretty often. When we wanted seafood we went to Bridgettes, which is another comedor that ...

Cars? We don't need no stinking cars!

... We ate here 3 times in 3 days. The first day we had lunch (mojitos!) of lobster and fish with a Cuban sauce. Carrie's grilled lobster tails were the best yet, and the cuban sauce on my filet was out of this world! We made reservations for the next night. They needed advance notice to prepare a special vegetarian meal for Carrie (some stuffed baked squash and beans) and I had umm... Baked Cuban (?) which was ripe plantains, marinated ...

....the ferry ride(s) from hell

... twice the price of the rest of the country.

Not many pictures i´m afraid. Just imagine a small tropical island like the ones in fairytales. It won´t be far wrong. I´d definitely recommend the place (especially with a lady friend in tow), but for backpackers it lacks much of a social scene or budget accommodation - but if you´re cool with that, it´s a great place to swing in a hammock and do nothing at all! :-)

Diving and hanging out

... or boats. I think I have seen everyone on the island, and I already recognize lots of the locals. There's one guy at the far north end of the sidewalk, who sits in a chair on his porch with a flyswatter ALL DAY. One time he was selling pineapples, but aside from that he pretty much just sits there. The island mentality is completely different here. If a person catches a lot of fish one day, he will just take the next few days off. Why work when you have money for food for a ...

Paradise found

... explore. We also managed to score a free three course meal at one of the more up market hostels when i drained the owners dog's aural haematoma. Little corn has it down sides - the restuarants ran out of food a lot and the food was a little pricey, electricity at our hostel was only provided between 6-10, the weather wasnt the best and there were a lot of mosquitos but despite all this it was great. It was greart watching the sun rise or a storm build up ...

¡Hammerheads and Dolphins! Little Corn Island

... dolphins. Super amazing. The two dives I have done here have been a complete success. I was only planning on doing two dives, but with the luck I´ve had, I will do another dive later today. I will likely leave tomorrow, but I might stay an extra day. The limiting factor is that the island isn´t cheap. The island is really small, and food and supplies are difficult to get. Right now, there are probably about 30 or so ...

Corn Islands - beachy goodness

... with the terrain become ever more difficult to navigate, but since we had come so far we were reluctant to turn back. The dog was also unsure, and we carried her over a few of the rocks. The rocks continued, and since the dog was too scared to go back, we had made our bed, Amy and I had to carry this dog over numerous rocks for around 2 hours. We emerged on the other side 2 and half hours later, thirsty and a bit sunburnt. Tired, we sat in hammocks and glugged ...

... and eventually had to split up because there wasn't a hotel with enough room to accommodate our group. We got some food and drinks then spent the night hanging out on the beach. The next day we all met at Picnic Center beach, which is a white-sand beach with the stereotypical blue Caribbean water and almost no waves. We spent the morning swimming and throwing tennis balls around and getting some sun. In the afternoon we went tubing and knee ...

The Corn Islands - An unspoilt Gem?

... shopping complex and watched 2 movies in the cinema for 2 dollars each. The time came and we returned to the chaotic bus station where homeless dogs ruled the place and we clung together until we were able to get on a chicken bus and spend the night bumping 7 hours along a road into the jungle. We arrived at El Rama, a little river town at 4am just as the intense tropical rains blasted down, creating street rivers within minutes. While taking shelter in a small ...
