... most point of the islet. Named in honor of King Philip II of Spain, the fort, also referred to as "El Morro" or "promontory", was designed to guard the entrance to San Juan bay, and defend the city of San Juan from seaborne enemies. The walk took long being punctuated by stops at different factory outlets which are en route (Shopping enthusiasts would love them!). Walking through the brightly colored houses on ...
San Juan, Puerto Rico magicarpet... wharf with huge chains and buoys but nowhere suitable to tie a dinghy up. So Captain Pete, Harri, Sarah and Zac got out of the dinghy while Tom and I went back around the bay to tie the dinghy up and walk back via the road. When Tom and I reached the facility there seemed to be a bit of a kafuffle going on the wharf, which included a couple of men, Pete, Harri, Zac and Sarah. Tom and I were quickly despatched to go and get the dinghy immediately! When we finally ...
Mayaguez, Puerto Rico bellavita... island also welcoming us and inviting to come ashore and have a look around. After a morning of swimming, snorkelling and beachcombing Toro, the customs official and Milton from the research facility took us on a walk/climb thru the island. These two were great showing off all the interesting parts of the island and giving us a run down on what happens on the island. First of all Mona island is home to the Mona Iguana which grows about 4feet long and wields its ...
Mona Island, Puerto Rico bellavita... different shades of blues & greens that one can possibly imagine. Unfortunately they have made their way into the 'endangered species' list because of unwanted human activities. For lunch we tried out the local fare in a small eaterie in the middle of the forest. We got a variety of fried seafood in a platter and it was yummy! We headed to a not-so-crowded Luquilo beach straight from the rain forest. It was the most ...
El Yunque-Luquilo, Puerto Rico magicarpet... i'll get there at some point..time is my friend. Ppl just can't believe their eyes when they see me walking with my bag...another local insisted taking me to the port.. at that point resistance didn't make sense so i clapped on my bag and hopped on.. as time being my friend the ferry was still there waiting for the rocky sea to calm. Mayaguez, Puerto Rico ramblerThe promised land. World-class board-breaking waves of Tres Palmas and Domes skirted by the crystal clear waters of Desecheo Island. House right on the beach with a swimming pool. Dive Shop, Taino Divers, in Black Eagle Marina. Banana Dang and the Rum Shack up in Puntas. Life is SWEET!
Rincon, Puerto Rico zroesingerAll flights arrive to BQN at extremely inconvenient times 4am! During my time in Rincon I made the trip thrice. Call Carlos in Rincon. He is dependable, friendly, speaks fluent English, is a Rincon local, has a huge van for your surf boards and is an all around good guy.
Aguadilla, Puerto Rico zroesinger... island and I was keen as mustard to check it out - and so I did! Stayed at La Posada Vistamar on Vieques for 2 nights. Good little place and not cheap by backpacker standards but was one of the most reasonable I could find at short notice. Lady running the hostel was lovely (Canadian girl, Lisa, I think) but there was no 'reception' as such so you were pretty much on your own once she did the meet and greet thing.
Vieques, Puerto Rico phillipa_k... hotel. Old San Juan is a wonderful place of blue cobblestones, narrow streets, and typical tourist shopping stores. There is a Coach outlet and several high end jewelry stores but by and large all the kinds of stores you see when you island travel. Most of the stuff is imported from the Honduras or Equador. Back at the hotel Tammy was quickly to bed while I set about editing the pictures.
Rio Del Mar, Puerto Rico travpsu... pony up an additional $50 to check our bag. Let that be a warning to you. It is okay to take up more space with bags but don't have any overweight bags. So much for our friendly skys. The Wyndham is a first class resort. The resort boasts two golf courses, numerous restaurants, two outdoor pools, miles of open beach, and classic designs. You can see how 60 ...
