Waiting for a geyser to erupt
... due to the Pink and White Terraces that were there, and the disaster of the volcanic eruption of Mount Tarawera. It was all quite amazing to see what they had excavated, and what they weren't going to excavate out of respect to the possible people still buried beneath. My trip was rounded off with a lovely walk by the stream to see the Wairere Falls, and a spot of lunch at the cafe. Back on the road again, and on the outskirts of Rotorua, ...
Hobbiton, Thermals, Bike Rides and Wind
... bike and was heading up and down the tracks with no problems. The two hours seemed to fly by but by the end we certainly felt like we'd done some exercise. On the ride back to the rental site I headed off on my own to check out a recommended grade five track. For some reason Alex didn't fancy it. The track was ace. The steepness of the slopes and the relentless changes in direction and gradient meant that I was truly knackered by the time I reached the car park. Good fun ...
Boiling eggs and jumping from planes..
... was so quiet once the shute was out and a realy wierd but cool experience. When we were almost at the ground I got into my landing position which was just knees bent and feet together and he gently put us down on the ground where I was able to just land standing.... pretty damn cool!
The skydiving company dropped us back at the hostel and then we decided to take a walk up to the hot springs which have little pools of water right by the edge of the big river which are nice ...
It's getting steamy in here...
... and
the worst nightmare for anyone who gets motion sickness. Needless to
say, we are still alive and I was able to manage the car quite well.
;-)
We drove south down to Rotorua, which
is supposedly the tourist capital of New Zealand. They have all the
geo-thermal activity there with explosive geysers, boiling mud pools
and that “unique” eggy smell of sulfur. We, unfortunately,
didn't have a lot of time to spend there, but ...
On our way south
... Acacia Cliffs Lodge at about 5pm and were welcomed by our wonderful hosts Rick and Linda with wine and canapes. We settled down to watch New Zealand romp to a convincing win over Canada before enjoying a delicious gourmet dinner prepared by Rick. We ate far too much but who cares? We finished the evening with more rugby, Ireland v Italy this time. Ronnie,we are cheering for Ireland!!!
