    A Very Pleasant Surprise

We arrived in Senggigi via boat from Denpasar, quite unprepared for what to expect, as we had not had the time or energy to do the usual research on the new destination in our travels. As such, we found ourselves hiring a taxi to help us locate a place. After checking out three different hotels, we settled on Sunset House. Excellent choice.

Beautiful garden and beach front settings - your choice, to accommodate your budget. We chose a room with a garden rather than a sea view, as it suited our budget. The room is huge, beautifully decorated in very modern decor, meticulously clean, and has a large balcony overlooking a beautiful garden, hillside view, and jungle scape, which you can take in as well from the wall to wall French doors that open on to the balcony.

The room price includes an excellent full buffet breakfast, which makes it an even better deal. The restaurant is open until 11 pm, and serves a variety of dishes. The hotel grounds on the seaview side are also beautiful, with a stellar pool overlooking the ocean, comfortable poolside furniture, and a number of large gazebos for lounging.

The hotel staff were very friendly, and the service excellent. We expect to be back in Senggigi in a couple of weeks, and will definitely be staying here again.

Room Tip: We stayed in Room 36 in the garden and liked it a lot, but the seaview rooms are also very nice, if your budget allows it, as they are considerably more expensive, but still reasonable for what you are getting.

The location was nice, a little over an hour from the airport but within walking distance to the shops and lots of restaurants. The staff was incredibly helpful and the view was great. be prepared for everyone coming onto the grounds to try and sell their products and services though. It would have been nicer if they had restricted their access to approach us while having breakfast...

    Peaceful, Clean, and Friendly Staff

We stayed here for one night during the low season and had a very relaxing time. The room was clean and the fascilities are the nicest we have stayed in for several weeks despite the affordable price. We paid a little over $30 US which is a good deal if you are traveling as a couple. The bed and linens are very nice compared to equivalent accomodations we have experienced in Bali, Gili Air, and Lombok.

The Sunset House shares the beach with only a few other accomodations and we had it mostly to ourselves. The sun sets over the water so it truly is great for sunsests. When the sky is clear you can see the volcano on Bali.

The staff is very friendly and they have great internet access.

Senggigi - Lombok's Only Bona Fide Resort Area

Thirty six hours after arriving in Bali, Indonesia, we are on a boat taking us to the northwest coast of Lombok, arriving at the resort area of Senggigi, which we are told is the only developed resort area on the island of Lombok. Unlike its neighbour island Bali, Lombok is just beginning to develop its tourism industry. In fact, Lombok is often …

... but women here appeared to be searching for fallen beans on the ground. In contrast to the seemingly social life of a tea picker Paul wrote about a couple of weeks ago, coffee picking did not appear to be as much fun. Upon reaching our hotel in Bondowoso, we stayed in one of our rare luxury spots - a hotel complete with helipad. Oh, and also a 600-guest wedding reception that night. It's just what a tired rider needs before the 5am alarm clock. Our next destination was ...

... to endure further climbs and we waited on the side of the road until some vehicles from Pondok Senaru arrived to ferry us home.

We are now perched high up in the mountains, overlooking Mount Rinjani and spectacular gullies, a waterfall, the ocean on the other side and there's a scary monkey running around... I think he's eyeing me off.....

So tired after an adventurous day.... Again it's the impromptu things that turn out to make the holiday memorable.

... I believe! The camp setting is stunning, on the other side of the mountain with an even better view of the sunset. The colours are an intense pink and orange. We chat, have dinner and go to bed early, although I don't know how anyone can actually sleep in those conditions.
Day 3: Surprisingly, I am still standing. The cramps in my legs are killing me but today we are mostly hiking downhill and a good part of the day in ...

... diving). There is also an exam at the end of it all.

After finally having the opportunity to go diving, I just want to say that it is FRIGGIN INCREDIBLE! I am SO glad I decided to do it! Being able to breathe underwater is a whole different experience. Don't get me wrong, snorkeling is awesome and I love that, too (especially the price), but not being limited to views from above and quick, furtive free-dives from the surface allows for such a different and amazing view ...
