Destination 396

[Ferry]

According to the fact, that I already have travelled around Eastern Europe at the beginning of this worldtrip, there was little reason - or better said, little money left - to do it again. So it was planed to take one of those many ferrys connecting almost every corner of the european coast of the Mediterranean Sea.<br ...
Chios, Northeast Aegean Islands, Greece pajas... fresh fruit and veg which was all served at breakfast. The room was nice and bright with 3 single beds and an en-suite. The downside to the room was the lack of any sound proofing which meant that the group of people in the chill-out area could be heard into the early hours and the high winds, which Alacati is famous for, howling through the night.

In town, we found a ...

After seeing some sights that were historical (although very sad to hear the history) we traveled to the small village my mom's family originated from (my grandmother's village)...Vessa. We pulled in and it was quite a quaint lil place and I enjoyed strolling down the small walkways finding things to take photographs of. We saw the home my ...
Chios, Greece jgrivettiTrying to get stuff from my Mac to an internet cafe PC! First try froze the sclerotic PC. Actually, I'll have to go back and convert the text to .pdf to transfer, I guess. Or, go on to a hotel or pension where my Mac does interface with the wireless modem, as in the present case it does not. Stay tuned.
Chios, Northeast Aegean Islands, Greece oldrover... bay. In such places, if you fancy seafood, ask the waiter if it is local. If he says yes - leg it as fast as you can or you will be adding to the sewage overload fairly rapidly and, probably, spectacularly ! It is a pity about this problem because the once Greek town of Alibey at the entrance is very attractive as is Ayvalik itself. However, Ayvalik is more of a working town with tourism being secondary. The tourist season was coming to an end when we ...
Chios, Northeast Aegean Islands, Greece chickensafloat... is the nicest hostel/pansyion we have stayed during our travels. The owner, Don Rodgers, has created a beautiful place and he is incredibly hospitable. Melanie and I have a great view of the harbor and the sea breezes are great. UPDATE: On our second day, we rented a car and drove around the island. Visited a beautiful black pebble beach and two ...
Chios, Northeast Aegean Islands, Greece sproutfamily... I ask the monk who was getting the VIP treatment. "This is the queen of Spain - Sofia. Here we get many VIPs. You are also a VIP, " he smiles. Our brush with royalty and we didn't even get to say hello. Lesser luminaries in the form of French President Sarkozy and his bride visited Chios last week, arriving secretly from Turkey one evening to spend the night in a 14-room/1000 euro-a-night hotel just a cut or two above our own. Everyone who's anybody comes here ...

They had disappeared. The woman later visited the church with her son who was soon cured. "I am here for this reason also," says the man. It turns out he's from Pittsburgh where he heads a construction company with his sons. Recently, he had surgery which resulted in severing some nerves in his head and creating ...
Chios, Greece peyton... an Internet cafe, where I'm sitting and tapping this as clouds close in over the harbor and a chill descends. I'm sure I'll be back here over the next few days as the hotel has no public Internet access (much of the hotel is under renovation) and while the general manager has graciously offered us the use of the computer in his office, I'd feel a little guilty pouring out prose in there at his desk while he waits patiently outside.
Chios, Northeast Aegean Islands, Greece peyton... separated by a couple of hundred metres across a wooded valley. If you come after dark follow the noise of sirens or the light of houses aflame. And thanks to Matthew and family for inviting me onto their balcony for the conclusion of the festivities. It was nice to actually meet some locals in Greece, especially as they were drunk as skunks, mad as ...
