... some emergency US dollars. Dan please bring us some more I think you have better bring 400, as the cashpoints are often unfriendly. Anyway, when we arrived in the pouring rain, we found that Lamu has installed one cashpoint since the Lonely Planet 2006 edition was written and it was a friendly one. Our next new friend, Ali ...

Lamu Lamu Lamu!

... who I like to call Hollywood....is someone who the other Heather met when she was in Lamu a few months ago. She said we had to hook up with him, he's a really fun guy etc. We also know that Chris works in the film industry and worked as a cinimetographer on The Long Way Down series. OK, so already I am a little intimidated. He is from LA originally. OK, enough background. James and I have the distinct feeling that Chris will be the guy that unlocks the secrets of Lamu for us....not ...

Rachael's December 2008 - Part 2!

... by the small pool and given fresh juice; then shown to our rooms. The hotel we stayed at was lovely (though the drainage for the shower in my en-suite didn’t work too well, I kept flooding the whole bathroom, but people repeatedly tried their best unsuccessfully to fix it). The hotel was a beautiful labyrinth of rooms and stairs, with sort of verandas with sofas and chairs where you could lounge, snooze or chat, dotted all over the place. Often you could ...

A swahili christmas...

For Christmas we headed further north on the Kenyan coat - don't worry parents, not as far north as the Somali pirates - to Lamu island. The town of Lamu is a world heritage site, an old Swahili town and port with no cars and only donkeys and dhows (sail boats) as a means of transport. It's got tiny winding streets, muslim ladies covered in head to toe in black, old swahili buildings with beautiful carved doors and ...

towards the kenyan coast: adventures!!!

Lamu Life

... out. Of course people have their problems like everyone else but they just seem so happy and content with their lot and it really rubs off on you after a while. I could have stayed there for days and days. But all good things must come to an end and by 6pm Lai and I were back in the hustle and bustle of Nairobi. It took us less than two hours to fly from Lamu to Nairobi and another two hours to drive from Nairobi airport to our ...

... Campsite. We had the place to ourselves and slept under our mosquito nets on top of one of their incomplete villas. Claus was the Dane with seven toes that I had met in Zanzibar and again in Dar. Katya and Lee were American Dykes that jumped into Claus' car in Zambia. For two months he couldn't get rid of them and was too scared to try. Although they were paying their share of the petrol, they were complete female misogynist pigs! We had a seafood ...

... ended up leaving our bags there, minus all the valuables, for no cost and took a matatu to the park. A matatu is a small 15 passanger bus, similar to chivas from panama, that drives around and loads way more than 15 people in. It is super cheap and an eay way to get around. Once we got to the park we took a long walk around the park and pretty much saw nothing. Well, I guess thats not entirely true, we did see a dung beetle rolling up a ball of poo ...

... dodging donkeys and donkey poop, and people watching. Then take a dhow back to Shella, check to see if the fishermen were in with their catch, take our purchase to the housemen at the guest house, instruct them on what we wanted for dinner, then head for the beach. After enough swimming, head back, shower, read for a while, eat our king fish, crab, lobster, jumbo prawns, or calamari, a plate of tropical fruit and coconut rice, read, then go to bed. OK....paradise is not ...
