... island as they had a local Hash House Harriers (we think you all know this running/drinking club after which the boat is named). It wasn't like many of the other hashes we've been to in that this crowd (of about 100 people) mostly just ran/walked and then beer and food was for sale afterwards. Without going into a long description of what a typical hash is like, let's just say it was lacking all the usual silliness. But is was a great way to get off the boat, see the island ...
Saint Martin, Antigua and Barbuda on-oncruising... so I was pleased when we managed to arrange to hook up down at a bar along side the ship. We drove across the island taking in Devils bridge, a narrow arch carved out by the sea leaving a natural bridge spanning the sea, if your carefully and the sea's not to rough you can walk along the bridge, although you need to be careful as the sea punches the water under the arch and shots it upward with some force alongside the bridge ...
Antigua, Antigua and Barbuda easygeeze... was absolutely breathtaking. Here I was, high above the cliff, overlooking below the blue crystal sea, the sun's rays illuminating the water, the deep blue sky with its candy ball clouds, it was unbelievable. It was another moment in time to be cherished forever. I kept running here and there with excitement in order to capture and memorize everything at once. Again, picture perfect.
Finally, we made our way to Nelson's Dockyard. The ...
... ll at least go down to the departure point to see what is happening since we paid a lot for the tour. I run by the excursion desk on the way to the departure deck and the lady tells me that we will get a refund if the tour operators decide to cancel due to weather. Not feeling too confident about that, we proceed to the pier. Thank goodness our excursion was cancelled because the weather is awful!! So back ...
English Harbour, Antigua and Barbuda sylviaenjeroen... Its capital is St. John's. The official language of the nation is English, often spoken with a distinct Caribbean accent, and the official currency is the Eastern Caribbean dollar, although U.S. dollars are widely accepted.
St. John's, Antigua, Antigua and Barbuda ashleylutt... the tourists look at me, loaded with bags like a poor donkey! They each held a tiny bag, complaining they could not find anything nice, jealously staring at my arms, filled. As usual, inside the bus, the tourists asked to see my treasures, like a peacock, I showed my findings!!! A Nike shirt for $17, Cactus liquor (can't wait to taste that one!!!) for $15, cigarettes for $15, fancy Egyptian shoes going for $40. And everything else...........from hair treatments to ...
St John,, Antigua and Barbuda banshee... raise the genoa again and prepare to head out sailing for a few days. When we return on Monday it will be to the Slipway marina where Free Spirit will stay while we are in the States. We will be having a number of places touched up on the gelcoat while we are gone. I will be in Philadelphia with our granddaughter and her parents for my entire visit. Al will fly up to Providence and drive to Hartford and Duxbury to see his brother who is recovering from surgery and his parents. Hope all is well with all of you!
More Antigua, Antigua and Barbuda freespirit2006... pictures from my fathers Antigua collection have been on my mind since the day we got here. I only hope the reefs have not degraded significantly in the 15+ years that have passed since those photos were taken... Off to lunch at the restaurant on the beach- Castaways. It will likely be Hawaiian Pizza, our favorite! So much for local cuisine... I'll introduce Matt to the Roti when we get to St. Johns.
Jolly Harbour, Antigua and Barbuda ramcc23... dish, and that we are not leaving without a proper meal.
Well, an hour later, and we are indeed enjoying a proper lunch - at least we weren't fooled!!
We have to return back to the ship as soon as we finish lunch, and we are to be carried to the last but most beautiful Island of all.
