We were getting our bearings and walked in a great big circle before managing to find our hotel. We checked in and the room was tiny! But what do you expect in central Tokyo?!? We asked our hotel to book Ryugin, one of the top restaurants in Tokyo and they managed to book a spot for 9pm on Thursday evening and the other booking was for Robot …

Nothing like some orange sprinkes for your cough

Startled by lights on so I must have dozed off again. Breakfast extravaganza time.

Juice, then a berry smoothie, then an artistically arranged plate of fresh fruit (we had some different stuff on each), then granola with fruit compote and yoghurt, then pastries, then a choice of traditional English breakfast or omelette or cinnamon and …

Japan is my favorite country in the world, so far. The people, the food, the mixture of tradition and innovation, the mentality. I love almost everything about this country.
So far I've been there four times, but Tokyo has definitely not seen the last of me yet.

Well, Tokyo is great, as far as big ass metropolitan cities can get, that …

A Full Day of Sightseeing

We woke up around 4am today in an attempt to take in some early morning action at the Tsukiji Fish Market. This is the country's largest fish market where the major tourist attraction is to watch the tuna auction, where wholesalers walk up and down rows of tuna to bid on the best-looking fish. This auction takes place between 5:15 and 6:30am. …

It's Crowded in Tokyo!

A travel blog entry by dtomkun

We began the day by heading to Harajuku, one of Tokyo's most popular neighbourhoods. One of the principal attractions located here is the Meiji Shrine, a Shinto shrine opened in 1920 in honour of Emperor and Empress Meiji. The pathway to the shrine included two large Torii gates and was lined with trees. Once we reached the site of the Shrine, we …

    Return to Sunroute Plaza Shinjuku

We stayed at the Sunroute Plaza last year. That time we booked through a hotel booking engine and ended up in a room (and a whole floor) that stank of smoke despite requesting a non-smoking room.

This time we booked direct and moved up from an economy double to a non-smoking queen bedded room and that's exactly what we got.

Last room on the 14th floor (1401) we had a partial view out of the hotel across part of Shinjuku (office block straight across, view was behind us).

The room was spotless and very clearly non-smoking as was the floor by the lack of any smoke smell in the hallway. Odd configuration of the room so that you couldn't sit in bed and watch TV unless you twisted around. No cupboard of any kind, just some hangers on the wall in the hallway. So don't plan on staying here for a long time if you don't like living out of a suitcase.

As with every hotel bed we've ever slept on in Japan it was hard, but softer than most. Awful hard pillows as usual though.

Breakfast was again good and staff friendly in the restaurant and reception.

Expensive compared to the economy double we booked last year but infinitely better due to bigger bed and lack of horrid stale smoke smell.

We will most likely stay at Sunroute Plaza when we next travel to Japan.
