Kaikoura - Touching Nature

After a pleasant journey, we arrived at the pretty coastal town of Kaikoura at around 5.00pm. Our prime reason for visiting Kaikoura was to go swimming with dolphins and seals, so having checked into the YHA we wasted no time in making the relevant bookings. Due to the popularity of the dolphin swimming excursion, we were put on to a standby list …

Loved this little village with big whales

A travel blog entry by bettytarle

Came just to see the whales and I was not disappointed. The town used to be a whaling town, and now exists strictly for the tourism, but thankfully, not everybody has this on their stop as I found the village very quaint and uncrowded. There is a very good all day track along the ridge with great views ofd the city and the oceanfronts below.

Amanda: We took the four hour ferry ride from Wellington to Picton on the South Island then transfered to one of the three train lines in the whole country (called the "Trans Coastal") to make our way down the east coast. Originally we were planning to go all the way to Christchurch, the biggest city on the South Island but I had read that Kaikoura …

What a way to wake up; it was raining really hard when we got up this morning. Thus we put on our walking boots, trousers and jacket in order to get going. It was a shame to leave behind this wonderful hostel but on the other hand, our predicion of it maybe not being so nice anymore with more …

The property owners are on site and have only had this hostel since last fall. It has great potential. They picked me up at the I center and dropped me back for an early bus. They are also very close to the Whalewatch/Train station and you only have a short walk to both. The wif/internet i is free but only available from front office.
