[Rich: Hello!
I was meant to write the Melaka blog, but as you will find out, I was ill for pretty much the entirety of Melaka, so I spent most my time in bed or on the toilet. Tom, however, failed to realise that this would prevent me from writing the blog (even though I missed out on everything) so he didn't take any notes (Tom: To be honest I was feeling a little lazy and couldn't be *****...). So we apologise if the blog is a little sketchy]

We catch a bus to Melaka and then get a taxi to Sunny's Inn. We check out the Historical sites in Melaka, which includes the old defense wall and a church and takes a whole hour for us to see everything! We then head towards China town which is all shut up but manage to find a place to have a drink which is nice and quirky and the people there invite us to there Chinese New Year celebrations the next day. We walk back towards our hostel stopping in the shopping centre on the way where there h...
Melaka, Malaysia hibbsI started writing this post whilst sheltering from a torrential rainstorm in Melaka, almost a week ago. Since then I have traveled several hundred kilometers north, through the towering skyscapers of Kuala Lumpur, skirting the edges of the Cameron Highlands, and across the causeway to Penang, to find myself here, in a small guesthouse in Georgetown. But I get ahead of myself, and must first return to Melaka to let you know how I found my first Malaysian experience... Rewind back one week... W...
Melaka, Melaka State, Malaysia kittierarMelaka is a funny little town down on the western coast of Malaysia. In July 2008 it was made a Unesco World Heritage site, and they are obvioulsy very, very proud of this fact. For about 500 years this place has changed hands between the Portuguese, the Dutch and the British, being taken and traded for a little bit of land here or there. As a consequence, it really does have a little bit of everything. Add into the fact that it has a thriving Chinese community and a bit like Malaysia itself,...

... he knew two. He said 'Do you want Indian or Chinese?", We were like "well, euuh", then he continued "Better Chinese, Indians not so good for cleaning shirts". The funniest part was that he was Indian himself! We finally found it hours later. The town of Melaka is very popular with people from KL at the week end. It turned out to be a real family town...more like Disneyland, actually.
At night, everything lights up, you can go on a boat ride on ...
... guitar at one of the old forts (and had a small audience) suddenly stopped and said to Danny, "You remember me of the Staying Alive man, the American, you know?" to which I started laughing lots and the man got more and more excited about his discovery and shouted "You remember me a lot of John Travolta!". Anyhow after a couple of minutes the man's audience were now staring at a very red and embarrassed looking Danny! Hehe it made me laugh!
Melaka, Melaka State, Malaysia dannyandjess... me what had happened. Yet again, a delighted and obviously thrilled tourist, asked her to pose for a photo with them while their friend took the picture. I didn't see this happen however, so I was a little dubious about her story and told her that I thought she was making it up in order to make me jealous that I hadn't been asked for my photo to be taken and been mistaked for a famous person (maybe George Clooney, or Mel Gibson - okay, an overweight George Clooney, perhaps? More probably ...
Malacca, Malaysia tjwanderer... market. So we spent more time shopping. Tina was in her element!!! She claims this was going to be the last time!!!! One eveing we went out and got to see the malaysian record holder for piercing a coconut with his fingers. It was crazy when he showed us his finger afterwards it was a complete mess. Swollen and completely bent. We thought there must be an easier way to get the juice out!! We then went to ...
Melaka, Malaysia ravntina... parts. I talked to a lad selling rooms in a city centre hostel, jumped on the local bus and off I went. Just like old times. After settling in to my accommodation (a rather strange two level room with a ladder up to the sleeping area) I went out to explore. What had originally struck me as a rather authentic old town (code for open sewers and crazy drivers) was actually dominated with a big fancy shopping mall and umpteen western ...
Melaka, Malaysia bosco... what else do you do when you are stuck in a rain storm in front of the Stamp Museum of Melaka?) We leave tomorrow for Indonesia and will spend 10 days-ish on the island of Java. Ernie is now reading Smiley's People, by Le Carre (I read it on Koh Chang, Thailand) and I am reading a book by Graham Greene, Travels with My Aunt. Ernie is getting over some sniffles and sickies, but I think he'll make it. All our hugs and misses! Maija and Ernie
