Took a day trip by car to visit a few Tulou clusters near where I was staying. The Tulou are absolutely stunning. Self contained multi-story villages. They all had wells in the interior courtyard as well as sometimes wells in the living spaces. The first group I went to was vey peaceful because it was earlier in the morning and not the huge tourist draw. Had a great time wandering around. Then I went to see "King Tulou" the claim to fame of which is that it's ******* huge. Like really ...

Their faces lit up with excitement when I showed it to them and of course they wanted to know how to make it (at this point I was very glad I didn't show them the only other stick figure I know, which is like 5x more complicated to make). For lunch we went to the Sheraton Hotel and the service was VERY SLOW. David's pizza took at least 45 minutes to come. We went to the gift shop and found Barb. They were selling real jade rings for $25, so I got one for me and one for Meg. We walked outside to the bank of the Li River. I have to say, I think that the river is Very Beautiful. We crossed the busy street once more to get back. ...

... hoping to find a room in one of Yongdings famous roundhouses which would only really be possible if I was approached rather than the other way around. For 5 I was able to stay in this huge roundhouse right in the middle of Liulian that with very few exceptions didn't seem to have been updated at all since it was first constructed. It had electricity, sort of and sometimes but that was it. My room was basic in the extreme. I had a bed a wood bench and desk like thing and that ...

    Living like a Hakka

My first destination in real China was YongDing to look at the ancient Tulou houses of the Hakka people.

It took my about 8 hours by train to get there, and as I was unfamiliar with the train system, I ended up with a "standing ticket," which is exactly what it sounds like. Standing. 8 hours. "Bring it on," I thought, until of course 3 hours passed by and I realized it was going to be a very long night.
