Flight and Arrival We started in Duesseldorf early Sunday morning (6.45 am) and landed on Malta Airport 2,5 hours later. We had a pleasant flight and enjoyed a view on glaciers when we crossed the Alpes. We were welcomed by Peter, a member of the local travel agency and had a short ride on an air-conditioned coach to our Appartement Hotel, Sundown Court, in Kappara (Sliema). The girls shared appartments for 4 and 6, the boys shared an appartement for 6. My collegue and I shared an appartment ...

Spectacular Malta

... if they would let him drill for it. They took that bargain and had it until Malta joined the EU. Then the EU said they could no longer do business with Libya. so Malta lost a great deal and now has to pay the same as everyone else.
The last stop was across the island at a fishing village. I had great fun bargaining with the vendors for food items: Sesame sticks, date bars, nut crunch and sea salt ...

A flying visit to say a quick goodbye

I've just popped over to Malta for a day & a bit (as you do!) to say a quick hello / goodbye to my parents (and bring them lots of goodies over for the last time in a while).

The weather is a little warmer than the UK, but not as warm as it's going to be in a week's time (ha ha ha).

Anyway, I'll keep this blog short so ciao for now!

The Costa Cruise Experience

... war, as a spit fire pilot. He was given money, a new set of clothes and the offer to immigrate when the war finished. He turned Australia down as he was scared of snakes and NZ down as he was scared of the 14000 sheep that existed at that time. He wanted to just stay in Malta and has remained there ever since. He really liked us because NZer's were allies in the war and just before we left told he did not like the Italians who fought beside the ...

Catching up on the past month in Malta

... would get warmer. The occasional trip to Valletta or Smart supermarket gets us out of the residence. We play soccer with some other girls from the residence on Tuesdays, but that tradition seems short lived. It was fun while it lasted though, except the part where I got hit in the head, and stomach, and arm with the ball. These girls are aggressive! And I'm nowhere near coordinated enough for team sports. Haha. I attended a visiting writer lecture for my ...

Malta Harbour Tour and Hypogeum

... He didn't come because he wasn't feeling well.) We waved at him, and shouted his name. He didn't notice anything, but the women on the bench next to him did. It was quite funny. He said later that he couldn't see us because the sun was so bright.   We caught the bus to the Hypogeum. The Hypogeum is sort of like the Terra cotta Warriors in China. It was found by accident when they were building houses in the early 1900s. The Hypogeum is a mass ...

Sailing back to Valetta

The seas were even rougher today, so we had no choice but go by engine to the boats home harbor in Valletta. Actually it wasn't in Valletta itself, but in the neighboring city called "Three Cities (Vittoriosa, Senglea, Cospicua)". Valletta is technically only the part of the city within the city walls. After having arrived, we went for a walk, and eventually ...

Paceville

... a big night on Friday with some of her friends but I thought I would take a look for myself tonight, to see what the fuss was all about. What can I say, Paceville is incredible. It is like a few blocks in a sleepy suburb of St Julians that comes to life at night. There were people absolutely everywhere spilling onto the streets between various nightclubs and bars. I mean it is not unlike King's Cross in Sydney but if you could see it during the day you would not ...

Gozo

... the last couple of hills to the harbour. A ferry was just arriving as I made my way down to the quay. The bow of the boat opened and people streamed out followed by the cars. Within 15 minutes I was onboard and we were sailing to Gozo. Twenty minutes more and I was on the pier at Mgarr Gozo. Three ferries were in operation so its clearly a very busy route. The only way out of the harbour(by road anyhow) is up. I stopped at a supermarket and got directions to the ...
