Today was an adventure. I took off at the perfectly calculated time for the winds to shift, and headed for an alternate route that I had planned yesterday at the library. I passed the Colorado state sign, which was exciting for me because I've never be in this state. My alt route had me cutting through the countryside and passing wheat farms and tractors. I had the next 4 days planned around where to get water from the river and stealth camp. (Stealth camping is a term I'm borrowing ...

... aplomb, but towing our trailer down this road was nerve-wracking. I would describe my technique as "tip-toeing". At the bottom we cross the Gunnison River using the Blue Mesa Dam to ascend again on U.S. 50.

We climbed into Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park and found a camping space for the night. By the time I had the trailer unhitched the sun was sinking close to the hill tops. We forayed out for ...

... we had missed. On the way back we stopped at Dragon Point and hiked out to the view. We stopped at the Painted Wall View and found it not as good as the view at Cedar Point. Devil's Lookout was another hike down and then up and the sun was relentless. Earlier I had put socks on with my Tevas because my toes were baking in the sun. We skipped Rock Point because it was another hike to get there and we could see it from Devil's Lookout. We ...

... anything like it. I think the pictures do a pretty good job of showing you what we have seen, but they can never catch the true height and depth and even the vastness of the land here in the west. The park is all uphill and at the highest point the canyon is about 2778 deep. In most of the photos you can see the Gunnison River. The gorge is 48 miles long and in that time the river drops 95 feet per mile. That is ...

... but we still had another hour and half left of driving to do to get to the park. It was a very scenic drive to the park, and once we pulled in we were amazed by the Black Canyon. We pulled into the visitors center to ask about camping and hiking trails. The nice ranger told us about the two campgrounds that were accessible on the South Rim side, South Rim and East Portal campgrounds. The East Portal was only accessible by driving down a 6 mile road with ...
