    ... beach was so light I had difficulty even launching my kite (less than 4 knots of wind). There wasn't an enormous amount of room to run with it either so I had to run to the waters edge and then drag the kite back up the beach about 6 times before I got it in the air. Once I got the kite fully inflated and up to the zenith (directly overhead), the wind completely shut down for about 2 minutes and my kite tumbled forward right out of the sky.     WE DID: - Shinkansen (bullet train) from Fukuoka to Kagoshima. Tram and Ferry from Kagoshima to Sakurajima. - Tour bus around the major parts of the island including an observatory (closest you can go to the volcano) for stunning views. - Local bus to a hotel with a natural hot spring onsen, created by the heat from the volcano. Mixed gender (came with no bathing suits!). Not too sure of the protocol and the manager helpfully said 'use a towel' but we ...

    Taking this for a sign we headed in and grabbed a seat at the bar, not realising what a good decision we'd just made.

    So it was another short hop down to Kagoshima for the day, it looked a fairly long way from Kumamoto but using the bullet trains it's always a quick trip! I'd made the day trip to visit nearby Sakurajima and its ever erupting volcano, on arrival I jumped on a tram across town for the short ferry ride from Kagoshima and on arrival at the port lo and behold the top of the peak started to billow ash and smoke, quite an impressive sight, it didn't last long but ...
