No words can do justice to the magic of this place: the food, the climate, the people, the unmatched scenery and history -- no wonder this place honouring the goddess Venus is a cross-roads of great minds from ancient civilisations to present time.

Arriving at Erice - June 15

Ryanair, delayed a bit, but no dramas. It was raining heavily in Rome, but arrived in a very sunny Trapani! Heat was scorching, but ...

Sicily never fails to amaze with its ancient monuments. Segesta and Selinunte were a fascinating day trip. Both were built around 400 centuries BC, the earliest and most important Greek colonies in Sicily.

The last host here I think was and would have been bearable... its a very different way of life, not integrating with modern society and working and cooking with what they have is all very well, but for me, right now, it's not so good.

I worked myself into a bit of a state while I was there, feeling very isolated and lonely, feeling that I need to stick it out since i have put ...

On Monday I arrived just outside of castellammare del golfo, a small town an hour and half out of Palermo. I'm staying with a guy originally from Naples called Giodarno, who I think built the house himself, or at least the !majority of it, and is constantly constructing different parts of the building. There is a Swedish guy who has been here for the last month and a Polish guy who I think has been here around 3 months but was here originally around ...

... looking the old fishing port. Suitably fortified we set off for some serious cycling on the SS115 to Agrigento for the afternoon. Huge lorries and coaches bearing tourists whirled past us as we ploughed along the highway. Some roadworks on a particularly spectacular viaduct meant that we succeeded in slowing down the main highway in Southern Sicily to 10mph for a mile or so but thereafter it was a case of keeping your head down and hoping that none of ...
