... sorting, marking, shelving, and recycling books. Recycling books is very sad, but unfortunately a necessary evil in an overflowing library in a time the population is googeling its way towards some form of illiteracy. For us the work was enjoyable, and we each took home a book.
By the time we were done the sun has already set. We spent the next few hours visiting with a few friends, eating a lovely dinner and then crashed into very deep sleep.

We have stopped here because the Church of the Nativity is not yet 'open' after the afternoon 'cleaning'. We finally made it to Jerusalem! Since we still had our rental car, the first stop we did on our first morning was at the top of the Mount of Olives, which has great views over the city of Jerusalem. From here you can see the Old City and the extensive Jewish Cemetery.

Next we drove out to the Holocaust Museum, as it lies a little further out of the city. It is a very well-done museum, depressing of course, but it displays the fate of the Jews during World War II in ...

We went through an Israeli checkpoint manned by what looked like teenage soldiers with large machine guns slung across their shoulders and a little later drove through a Palestinian Authority checkpoint and were in Bethlehem.
