New Zealand - South Island

... day. Separated for over an hour it occurred to me that this was the longest we had been apart for nearly 7 weeks. Very strange being with someone every second of the day and I know I probably couldn’t do it with anybody else but I guess that’s why I married him!!!!
Anyway walking, beautiful mountains we finally worked out that the ski season had ...

... us. All the boys loved it and Beckie even managed to join in when they bought out their delicious home brewed cider. After dinner in the pub, a group of local men persuaded Rob to join then for a 'quick' game of darts. Beckie was left on her own and was soon adopted by the landlady, Sue. After about 10 games, Rob reappeared followed by a local policeman (wearing shorts and wellies!), a very large Maori man and the Landlord, Pete (originally from ...

Spent most of the day driving cross country to Christchurch. Stopped off at the Mt Cook salmon farm on way and picked up a whole salmon for 8 pounds!! Then had lunch at the Farm Barn in Fairlie which overlooks the most scenic valley I've ever come across. Wrongly decided to drive the scenic route to CC, which is very exposed and not good in gales and driving rain (luckily Jen was driving!). Then my sun visor broke so I had ...

It has take 6 years for the rubble to descend from the top of the glacier to the bottom where it sits now and will take only another 9 months to go away completely.

So we put on our crampons (those spikes that you attach to the bottom of your boots to allow you to walk on the ice) and set off up a very ...

Roadtrip

... speak for themselves. Before leaving New Zealand we had to return to Queenstown to pick up our new passports and meet another friend Tom before flying out of Christchurch. Our other passports were full and the process of arranging new ones took up a lot of our time on the South island and dampened our spirits. We still enjoyed it though and after driving 3000 Km and crocheting 3 hats, we left for Austrailia a day later than planned but with passports in hand.

New Zealand - Chapter One

... t much more than a cafe and a bar with nothing too special aside from the atmosphere, so we split and order of nachos, had a drink, and were on our way. We then got our free glass of champagne in the hostel bar with one of our roommates and spent the rest of the night playing cards. We called it a night somewhat early since we had a lot to do the next day! The next morning we got up and successfully figured out the bus system, making a ...

... accommodation, explored a bit, spent some time laying in the sun at the side of the lake (another beautiful warm day!) before retiring to our motel to have our first home-cooked meal for - we can't remember - but a long time! Day 41 Today we drove via the Haast pass to the Glaciers - Fox and Franz Josef (in that order). We stopped off a few times at waterfalls and beaches ("Haast" beach - which looks a lot like a Scottish beach) before arriving at Fox Glacier ...

Transalpine Adventure

... Coast to Greymouth on the West Coast. We spent nine hours on the train, with a one hour break in the middle. We were picked up at our motel at 8:00 in the morning by our shuttle, and we were dropped off at the Railway station. We got to rest in the lounge for about 20-25 minutes. It was really nice, because some of us had a cold. We boarded the Transalpine train and headed off on our adventure through ...

... greeted by several pods of dusky dolphins ... how cute ... they were so playful jumping up alongside the boat ... can't wait to swim with them in Asia. We had planned to have a chill out day and in an attempt to get some colour we sunbathed by the sea but we only lasted an hour as it was so hot ... bloomin hole in the ozone layer ... STILL WHITE!!! With not much else to do without spending money we decided to make a start on our journey to the West coast. A few ...

... and guide books about virtually every district, town and trek in New Zealand. You could literally arrive in Auckland knowing virtually nothing about the country, and within minutes have enough information to plan your whole trip covering the whole country. We were glad we didn't buy a guidebook for because we really didn't need it. We must have picked up 5 pounds of guidebooks to look at and sort through! We also picked up a BBH card to get discounts ...
