Impressive hotel in a central location

A great hotel that is centrally located and in walking distance to most places worth visiting. At 22 stories, the hotel is the tallest building in Yangon. The rooms are very spacious and well appointed. Free WiFi is available to guests (a luxury in Yangon at the time of writing). The staff are very friendly, although, the service in the restaurant and lounge can be slow.

          Peak season loses our room

First night was in twin (king single) beds as the hotel is full and the reservation I made for king sized bed seemed to be a preference or not confirmed, but the next day we move rooms to one with a view of the pagoda.
The pool is out of sorts, unfortunately, but the concierge arranges free transport across to the Shangri-La Residences to enjoy a swim there.
We appreciate that gesture, and it gave us a chance to walk around Kan Daw Gyi lake.

Maybe lacking a bit the charme of Birma....but this is a worry free, well organized place up to international standards.

Pip acted as tour guide today, mapping out a number of 'must see' sights for us to go to. After a leisurely breakfast we changed some money and then walked to the Bogyoke Aung San Market, also known as Scott Market. This huge covered market has more than 2,000 shops and is credited to be the best place to buy souvenirs. We didn't buy anything. Pip …

We started our morning back at Bogyoke Aung San Market (Scott Market) where I bought a man's longtime and Pip and I each bought a lacquerware teapot.

After taking out purchases back to the hotel, we took a taxi to the National Museum.

Myanmar is the dust bowl of the earth but I wouldn't change a thing.

          Cruise End

We disembarked the Avalon Myanmar for the final time at 11.00am for our flight from Bagan to Yangon. Or should I say 'flights'! While we were not required to leave the plane, we made two stops before arriving in Yangon.

It was a very strange flight in that the pilot raced around the tarmac on take-off and landing at each airport and we …

After breakfast we, 23 passengers, were given a briefing by Myo (pronounced, 'mule' without the 'le'). Myo is our local guide for the duration of the cruise. For starters, we were given a some useful Burmese words:
mingalaba - greeting for any time of the day
          gee-zoo-bah - thanks
          ta-ta - goodby

          The briefing included:
