Sinking beyond low

... the 7/11, who nuked them for us. We then sat outside on the steps of a closed bank, by the ATM machines to eat our dinner. It was pretty Pathetic, yes, with a capital P, and even the locals looked at us with pity and lots of curiosity and wonder. The food was surprisingly good, however, and now, we CAN say that we ate on the streets.

When we got back to the guesthouse, where we had a teak veranda, our next door neighbours started ...

The Ruins of Siam

... bicycle and road across to the park. The park is really quite large and not only does it have the ruins but there are many trees, beautiful gardens and lily ponds scattered everywhere.

I stood outside and waited to purchase my ticket and chatted a bit with a french couple who *****ed about the "expensive" entry fee. The guidebook said it was 30 baht but the book is always wrong and the price was now 100 baht per park (there were 3 in total). It ...

Ode to the Walrus Temple

We kinda acted like walrus today, laying around in the air conditioning all day. I think I help with the heat exhaustion from the day before. We finally rolled out of bed around 5:30 (that's pm) and we decided to go back to the Sukhothai National Park and see if we could get some sundown pictures and there was to be a show and fireworks. We decided to eat before we headed there and picked a street vendor. We both decided that this vendor was not to ...

Old Sukhothai - Treasures from 700 Years Ago

... make this reasonably priced option a "brilliant" place to stay, as the English travelers would say! Yesterday I relaxed and explored the new town (a typical small Thai city with not too much to see.) Today I am going to Boon Lott's Elephant Sanctuary for 3 days. Located in Si Satchenalai, near Ban Hat Siew, in Sukhothai Province, this is a newer and very unusual Elephant preserve with 8 rescued elephants so far. Stay tuned to my blog. That will be my next entry!

Ancient City of Sukhothai

... politics, religion, etc through architecture was very important in ancient times. We don't see a lot of that anymore which is both a good and a bad thing. Good because we aren't subjected to the images of someone else s ideologies everywhere, bad because the culture of art starts to dwindle. Most of the city resides within the surrounding walls, but there are also a large number of ruins outside the city walls. We biked to a number of these outlying ruins, some of which were amazing, some ...

His English, although incomprehensible most of the time, is still better than most monks. In fact, the majority of the monks don't speak any English at all. The Historical Park

... of Thai civilization. It was established in the 1200s as the religious and political center and served as the capital of an empire larger than that of the current Thai nation for several hundred years. The ruins today consist of dozens of wats (temples) spread out across many miles. The archaeological center is quite condensed, but other wats are increasingly farther apart as they radiate out. New Sukhothai, the modern town, is a good 10 miles away from the old ...
