The Geo-Thermal Hot Springs City

A travel blog entry by meznglenn on Sep 04, 2014

Beppu is the third largest Geo-Thermal Hot Springs City in Japan and as we approach the port there are spouts of steam everywhere. It is located on the southern island of Kyushu and the written references to the hot springs go back to the 8th century. We haven't booked a tour today, we are going to wing it and see how we go. It seems evident by the line at the free shuttle stop that many others are doing the same. We get to the Beppu Station where all modes of transport ...

... fell asleep in one of the pools.

As I was getting a bit too hot from the sun and the hot thermal water, I decided to go to the other side of the facility to the public pools. One of the rules of the onsen is that once you are finished you do not rise off. ... luck to be the only one there. I took three onsen baths today. I loved each and every one of them. The dinner I got at the ryokan was the most culinairy thing I had until that day. My apologies about the huge amount of food pictures! The food felt so special, I just had to take pictures of it. The small bowls of Japanese food were all local products and really pretty. I didn't know what I was eating. Everything except that pickled **** the Japanese like so ...

Day 17 - Beppu - Through hell and back

Beppu is actually kind of a boring city. I went there for the onsens and it a good location to travel from when going to Kurokawa onsen (see day 18). One of the most famous thing in Beppu are the so called hell onsen. A couple of natural hotsprings, all some kind of different thing to them. It sounded fun so I checked them out. Wow was that dissappointing. The first two ...

Beppu

Beppu didn't quite live up to my expectations but they were probably too high. I stayed in a Ryokan - traditional Japanese accommodation - and while it was nice it was a bit run down. The meals were huge but of average quality. The Onsen was the highlight, the outdoor pool heated by the thermal activity in the area. I was staying in Kannawa ...
