We arrived in Hiroshima and it was raining. It is rainy season here in Japan and although we've hardly had blue skies, the grey haze has protected us from the possible heat from the sun. It's bad already with the humidity here that is pretty strong. We've been sweating like crazy! Hiroshima is best known for being the first place ever to be hit by an atomic bomb. On August 6, 1945 At 8:15am. Hiroshima was destroyed. Just like Nagasaki, Hiroshima has a memorial park and museum. ...

Day 119 It was an early start and a train ride to get a ferry to Beppu which is in another part of Japan called Kyushu. It was a 20 minute walk to the ferry and we realised that we'd get there right when the ferry was due to leave. We part ran, part walked in a panic. When we got to the ferry port we ran to the ticket office. There was a guy there buying a ticket, taking ages and asking a lot of questions....aaaaaaaahh! Finally he left, we got the tickets and the ...

... slopes of grass and boulders but, even with her staff, after about 15 minutes up uphill walking Nat started to feel a little light-headed and unusually out of breath.

Continuing on at a slow pace through a wonderful forest, we came to a split in the tracks. To the right was a 2.5km hike up to the summit of Yufu-dake and to the left was the downwards trail towards Yufuin, where the hike ends.

After speaking to a couple ...

... generous to the pedestrian at the timed crossings). However, we were both startled to hear My Bonnie lies over the ocean being played as we trudged across the road. Quite bizarre! There is also a siren that sounds at 12.00pm and again at 7.00pm, playing a lovely tune. We haven't found out what it is for. Arthur has a theory that it is a tsunami warning and they test it out every day. One would have to hope that a tsunami wasn't on its way at those times, because ...
