Beppu is the third largest Geo-Thermal Hot Springs City in Japan and as we approach the port there are spouts of steam everywhere. It is located on the southern island of Kyushu and the written references to the hot springs go back to the 8th century. We haven't booked a tour today, we are going to wing it and see how we go. It seems evident by the line at the free shuttle stop that many others are doing the same. We get to the Beppu Station where all modes of transport ...

As I was getting a bit too hot from the sun and the hot thermal water, I decided to go to the other side of the facility to the public pools. I didn't know what I was eating. Everything except that pickled **** the Japanese like so ...

... wrong but it was a really painful experience... Later in the evening I had a great time in a local restaurant. This dude who called himself Camel, sat next to me and wanted to have a conversation. He hardly spoke any English, but he really tried. He showed me how you drink sake like a real Japanese dude and ended up talking for a couple of hours. The nicest Japanese guy I ...

... a number of pools called "hells" which are only for viewing. Some were quite well done but overall it was a bit touristy, gimmicky and run down. I especially disliked the one with crocodiles crowded into cages that had concrete floors and they had fresh scars on their snouts. Not nice. So it was ok but certainly not the highlight of the trip so ...
