Here's some pics from the pottery town of Karatsu, north Kyushu. Lots of pots for my ceramic friends. Pottery here traces its roots back to the 15th century. This is due to the influx of Korean potters brought back by Lord Hideyoshi in what is often called the "pottery wars." The only family dating back to that time is the famous Nakazato family who have an unbroken lineage of fourteen generations. Ummm a bit different to pottery in the uk, no wonder they know how to build anagama ...

Looking at things a little differently

It's winter time again. Sean has gone back to the US. We had a wonderful time together! I'm so happy he was able to come here....if only for a short while. Happy New Year!!

The Year 2014 is complete! Needless to say it's been an incredible year for me. I've been extremely blessed and as a result, able to cross several items off my bucket list. I am deeply grateful to everyone who has been a part of making this journey possible. There are many of you, and I am thankful to each and every one! Most importantly, however, I'd like to thank my husband, Patrick. He ...

A travel blog entry by anita.russ on Dec 18, 2014

... having a Japanese tour all to ourselves where we could ask questions and move at our own speed. We returned to town and went back to last night's mall to have frozen yoghurt and a wander around town a bit. We would have gone for a walk along the beach but it was far too cold. We returned to the hotel for a rest. Maki rang Rina and found that she was let out early again so we decided to go and try our hands at Karaoke! This is not normally my kind ...

Meeting Rina in Beppu

A travel blog entry by anita.russ on Dec 17, 2014

... centre. Rina was joining us at about 4pm and so we decided to meet at a restaurant famous for it's grilled chicken. The last time I saw Rina she was a tiny baby who could sit up but not do much else. I think she was about 6 months old and her brother Yuto was 5. They are now 19 and 23 years old and have grown into intelligent and attractive young adults. Katie was looking forward to meeting them but was a bit anxious in case they didn't speak English but they are both ...
