Bangkok - Kanchanaburi - Bangkok

We did our trip to Kanchanaburi for 2 days and it was lovely. The trip was lovely and it was lovely to be out of Bangkok for a couple of days. We started our trip by being picked up at the hotel at 7am on Wednesday. From here we drove 2 and a half hours to Kanchanaburi and our first stop was a cemetry for the prisoners of war from the second world war. After this, we went to a war museum and then a walk over the original bridge built in the second world war over the River Kwai. We then went t...

Is this the bus to Cartajena?

Well, that was an experience! After the beauty of Ayutthaya, I took a local bus to Kanchanaburi. I am now completely convinced that these are better than the 'VIP air-con - read tourist - buses which operate the same lines but with much higher prices, arctic air-conditioning and everyone on-board is from the west. The local buses are colourful, have open windows which are better ventiulation than any air-con but most importantly, you're guaranteed to get giggled at by school children, stared ...

Goodbye seems to be the hardest word

Wow!! Just got back from Kanchanaburi, about a 120 km North West of Bangkok and have spent another eventful(You decide!) two days. After the 8 days up't North A restful day was spent back on the Koh San Road, my new home from home. Rose and I checked into 'The Tourist Hotel', it was cheap. We along with the rest of the trekking party who were heading south the next day ate and slept, the night train Journey had not been the best. That evening, Saturday the 24th, involved more food and a coupl...

Death Railway

Hello, We left bangkok again and travelled for 4 hours by train to Kanchanaburi. The train journey was one of the most unconfortable journeys ever, i mean who in their right might would install wooden seats on a train? Mind you the train only cost 2 pound which is not too bad! We arrived at our hotel which was a series of bungalows on the river Kwai, the bungalow was very spaceous and clean and only cost 4 pounds per night (what a bargan!) The cafe at the bungalow also boasted an impressive v...

The river Kwai

Got to Kanchanaburi by bus (almost as efficient as the SA buses but without the food and drink) and got settled into Sugar Cane (very nice by the river!). The area is infamous for its role in the war with the 'death railway', specifically the bridge over the river Kwai and Hellfire Pass. Whilst the original bridge has long since gone, its still an immense structure. The Hellfire Pass memorial was well worth a visit and there is a very moving atmosphere there, a fitting memorial to the men tha...

Kanchanaburi

Ok.... I got some really hot tips on how to improve the quality of the photo's I take so the first 10 photo's may not be all that great for printing unfortunately. I left Bangkok for Kanchanaburi the other morning for a 2 hr. mini van ride. I had no idea were I was going to sleep but after a bit of exploring this sleepy little town, I found a nice little hut right on the river. It was a bit expensive for me at $6 per night but all the $2.25 rooms were already taken. So for $6 I have a private...

Kanchanaburi

This place only about 2 hours away northwest of Bangkok has been such a breath of fresh air! We took a local bus out of Bangkok and met this wicked British couple, Nick and Helen, who we hung out with in Kanchanaburi. We found accommodation pretty easily by taking a taxi to the bungalow hotspot. Sugar Cane bungalows is where we stayed and had one of the best views of the River Kwai, rugged limestone peaks and the ever so popular floating karaoke bars that get pulled around the river with long...

POWs and Tigers

... a very busy day for tomorrow. Got up early and headed to the war cemetery where thousands of people are buried, mostly Brits, Dutch and Aussies who died at the hands of the Japanese in the war camps in this area, building the Thai-Burma railway. Really sad and sombre affair. Guys younger than me dying in a foreign country building a railway through the tropical jungle. Headed to the adjacent museum which is one of the best museums I've been to. Not too big but it ...

Kanchanaburi - Frogs, Dogs and Mozzies

... past him, which pushed Tom into Ben, who nearly fell into the water :D It was pretty hilarious as we all tried to stand up right, whilst falling over at te same time; if only Chris had taken then photo at that point. After drying off we all headed back to the start to catch a bus back to the hostel. On the way down Tom and Ben stopped at stage 5? of the waterfall to slide down some rocks into the water, a bit like a mini water ...

Markets and Bridges and Tigers, Oh My!

... was awake. But a few minutes later we were sent to the tiger - our three guides in tow - for our special photo. We had decided ahead of time that I would hold the tigers head, so we arrived behind the tiger and I was instructed how to carefully maneuver into a seated position, then seconds later PLOP -- down came the tiger's head dropping heavily into my lap. I smiled for a few photos, then Paul dropped in behind the tiger as well, then it was all done. We were ...
