... about ten minutes of stumbling and searching for signs...I did say that I though this to be NOT one of our better ideas..... However it is amazing how quickly the sun does rise and very soon we were walking in beautiful morning sunrise with the mist hovering over the corn field and the roosters crowing and the cows mooing......and if I had smell o rammer you too could be blown away with the delightful morning country smells...... It was, I have to say a very hard day.. ...

This morning we awoke to another dark morning and after what has been voted the WORST French breakfast..we set off on our walk for the day ...... 20 km.. We did experience a wonderful sunrise and today the weather was threatening rain most of the day which made it very humid however in all very very pleasant... Again and again I know I keep saying, but the countryside is simply breathtaking...now we have the perfect back drop of the Pyrenees In front ...

After a nice hotel breakfast, we travelled by bus to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port (yes, that is the name of a city - complete with a mouthful of hyphens) to experience a farmers market, a small taste of the "Camino de Santiago" trek and a nice Basque lunch from the Navarro region. The town is at the lower slopes of the Pyrenees and the green hillsides reminded me of Sonoma with larger mountains in the background. Good local wine, olives ...

France again.

Drove through Guernica, site of severe bombing in the Spanish Civil War in April 1937, with huge civilian casualties, and inspiration for Picasso's anti-war painting "Guernica."
