Who knew I'd enjoy Montgomery, AL as much as I did...
It all began when we pulled into our hotel. I've come to expect a very standard room by now, but when we got to our floor and opened the door, I was pleasantly greeted by a really nice room. They had recently renovated the hotel, and clearly hired some sort of Feng Shui decorator. I loved it. Everything was crisp and clean, but with warm touches ...
... marches, Martin Luther King, Jr., Governor George Wallace, court ordered busing and integration, Rosa Parks, the bus boycott, the Southern Poverty Law Center and on and on....but THIS is the place where most of that history unfolded.
We stopped and toured the Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church, where Martin Luther King, Jr. was minister. We knocked on the door and a friendly woman let us in and gave the three of us a ...
... and proposed tennis court land, to make herself and her kids a home.
Suzy keeps the house in the style of when she was raised there. Long halls, huge kitchen, formal and informal living rooms and dining areas The house reflects generations of family and love and life. Beautiful appointments with stories behind every piece. I especially loved getting the garden tour of her home. It is Suzy’s own rain forest jungle!! From the patio to the greenhouse and vegetable garden the ...
... sauntered in with a confidence only a man used to his station in life exudes. "If that is true", Young drawls in his slow paced perfectly timed bass voice, "I’ll walk naked to the Dairy Queen!"
That set the pace for the evening as we all climbed in Young’s SUV and travel down to Marney’s a couple blocks away. George had to leave us to be with his wife, Donna for her birthday dinner. For George to squeeze in time to visit with us ...
... used. By the way Davis is buried in the same cemetery where my family has a plot in Richmond.
After about three hours in Montgomery I headed west and stayed on US 80. What an amazing ride that was. I was pretty much in the middle of no where the entire day. Somewhere between Dublin and Montgomery I was it by some angry storms. The rain I can handle. When the wind is blowing so hard that it pushing me into oncoming traffic I need to pull over. I ...
Believe it or not, there are 54 Championship Holes at the Capitol Hill Golf Course in Prattville, AL that are part of the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail. Jerry took the opportunity to get in a round of golf and was amazed at the beauty and pristinely maintained course.
While Jerry was hitting a small ball around Prattville, Alex & I spent some time in the pool to cool off. Bella used to jump into the pool to me when she was a puppy, but I couldn't ...
We left the Gulf Coast today and headed into Alabama to visit with Aunt Kathy and Uncle D. I used to live with Aunt Kathy and Uncle D in Florida. But I haven't been to visit then in Alabama for the last 5 years. What a great reunion.
My cousin Jackie cooked up some homemade lasagna and these ...
... cops can only use up north - probably because there are no exits given there is nothing to exit to) near the Georgia/Alabama border we hit small town centers that seem to follow the same pattern. Secondary highway enters the town square forming a roundabout encircling a small park or town hall encompassed by small outdated shops you would think were Hollywood movie sets for old westerns. I half expect the facades of the little ...
Montgomery, Alabama, United States tednims... we saw drove along the route that the marchers took and saw the bridge where things went so horribly wrong on their first attempt. Both Selma and Montgomery's memorials/museums provide a good sense of how many people were involved in the boycotts, the sit-ins, the marches and the protests and offered an insight into some of the personal stories and senseless deaths. Absolutely a testiment to both the best and the worst of human nature.
Montgomery, Alabama, United States lauravanwaas... my usual modis operndi- I followed the signs to downtown and looked for a hotel. Montgomery has a beautiful capitol building; great ionic columns, large white dome, surrounded by administrative buildings. I was the only car on the streets. Now, it's Sunday afternoon so that wasn't so unusual, but the town was a little eerie. There are only two hotels in downtown Montgomery: Embassy Suites and Guesthouseinn (or some such thing). I tried Embassy Suites first, $175. I ...
