This morning I awoke thinking about our target birds for the day...LEAST GREBE, RINGED and GREEN KINGFISHER. We set out for Santa Ana NWR early. Upon arriving we quickly noticed that today was going to be a challenge as the trails were quite muddy in the aftermath of what we call mini-hurricane South Texas (remember yesterday's entry?). We got to Bentsen to the beautiful sounds of Border Patrol helicopters (if you don't know...Bentsen sits right on the Rio Grande and is a hot spot of illegal crossings). We barely got to the visitor center when we found CLAY-COLORED THRUSH, BUFF-BELLIED HUMMINGBIRD, and OLIVE SPARROW. On our way down the road...Bob yelled stop so we cheated death and did a U-turn on a busy road and back-tracked a bit. Bob may be afraid of JUNGLEFOWL...but he has good eyes as he spotted two UPLAND SANDPIPERS. After that we headed to Smith Oaks. ... a siren which they blast from every vehicle they place in the parade and run them constantly down the parade route. The good thing is you know when the parade is coming and you know when it is over.
Then there are the marching bands. Hard to hear over the official vehicles, but onward they come. Then come the floats carrying the beauty queens from all manner of different events, and more dignitaries, and more people just looking to be in a parade.
