So, day 2 and the weather has again been great, a little cooler and hazier than yesterday but still blue skies above us most of the way. As the name of this leg sounds, the main part of the day was spent crossing from northern holland into Freisland in the north east across a large body of water on a 32km (we know because we measured it) dyke built by some guy called Lely to link the two peninsulas. Sunday morning is no time to sleep in. We are ready to move on to more adventures. We walked to the tram stop and rode back to the P R Parking (inexpensive overnight parking, in case you're ever traveling here). A short drive north brought us to our first destination, Zaanse Schans, a windmill sancutary, of sorts. They "rescue" old windmills and bring them here for refurbishing. You can pay a few euros to go into a couple of the windmills. One ...

Morning arrived with a continuing strong south-west wind and light rain. So, as soon as the dining room opened at 08.30, I was first in and immediately tucked into a hearty breakfast. I picked up the North Sea Cycle Route (NSCR) a few metres from the hotel and sped north, often in excess of 30km/h, in the shadow of a huge sea wall … something one gets used to in Holland!

After a while I left the NSCR at Sint Maartens and headed north east towards the Afsluitdijk, ...
