... to dust, overrun by lizards. How very small we all are.

The Greeks established and built Paestum, supposedly in honor of Poseidon but also dedicated to Heracles, around 500 BC. The Romans then conquered, of course, and used Paestum and its surrounding pines to build ships until the pines were wiped out and the land became swamp. Then disease and starvation overcame the population, and Paestum was wiped out and ...

... by one of the longest, hottest, sweatiest travel days of our trip to date and it went like this: 15 minute walk into Amalfi with our backpacks, 2 hour boat to Sorrento, 10 minute shuttle bus to Sorrento train station, wait in the 37 degree heat for about half an hour before our 1 hour (30 stop) unairconditioned train to Naples train station, with about 5 minutes to spare we launched on to our 1 hour (snazzy and outrageously expensive Eurostar) train to Rome central, where we got ...

... 8230;and we needed to go to Italy for this!? To add to our excitement for the day, the lightning knocked out our electricity and no manipulation of the breakers would restore power. Luckily, a call to Luigi sent an electrician our way who restored the power in short order by tripping the breaker on the main outside box. Definitely our nominee for the hero of the day!

As the day progressed, the rain slowly subsided but the percolation through the ...
