The parents visit

Last week my parents came to visit me. It was very nice to see them again as it was the first time in over 8 months. Dad didn't believe it was me when we met because of my bleached hair and 'castaway' beard. Mum could finally relax and I could finally go to a restaurant again. I was very pleased to be on easy street again. We ate out (spending a week's budget on a meal), hired a car, and went on two boat trips. The boat trips were my highlight of the week. I'd never done ...

Easter in Tobago

... someone's groin). They wouldn't stop just because the girl said no or said she wasn't interested or pushed the guy away. When they did give up they'd go to the next girl in the group. As soon as one guy left a girl there would be ten to take his place. I was glad to be a boy. The party stopped when a policeman with a shotgun raised in the air ordered everyone to turn the music off.

Limes and Doubles

... else. In many places there are people selling "doubles" out of the backs of trucks...for example at the airport in Trinidad. A double is two pieces of fried dough filled with a concoction of curry and spices and pigeon peas, covered in green and hot sauces...and doubles are fantastic. A double double (two doubles) costs a little more than $1.00 and is a very filling breakfast!

There's a reason they call it the RAIN forest

... and would be even moreso if there was sun! However, this notion that Englishmens' is one of the best in the whole Caribbean is a bit much...it's not even close to Vieques and many other Virgin Islands for example... We are trying to remain up beat but we're soggy and mosquito bitten!

jelly belly

So... we head up to the north of the island, leaving without breakfast on a sunday morning and realising quickly what a mistake we have made, again. Once more, starvation is a distinct possibility. Reached Speyside, as North as you can go and paced back and forth outside a restaurant looking like we were going to do the place over until 1pm when the place opened. Didnt bother sitting at a table, just ransacked the kitchen. Speyside was a beautiful spot on the Alantic side ...

Culture Shock

... bottle of rum which they offered me, I chattered away as best I could understand them, until I learnt that a guy spoke Spanish, so we continued talking in Español which was much easier for me! Despite a burst of rain, the Tobagonians put on quite a show, the fireworks were long and spectacular. With most of the people very poor, many living in tin shacks, I thought I had again entered another country when I went for a drink ...
