What we thought would be a vacation...

We were really excited to finally get to a Croatian island. We took a ferry from Split to the island of Hvar. It's a really small island where pretty much the only thing to do there is go to the beach. We didn’t have a place to stay booked because we knew about the "sobes." They are apartments locals rent out to tourists for really good deals (especially in October when it’s on the border of shoulder season and off season). The second ...

Croatia beaches

After we left the park, the drive down to where we are now was spectacular, although a bit different than I pictured Croatia to be-it is a lot rockier and a bit more like what we thought Greece would be like. Our second campsite was just before the town of Zadar in a town called Nin; we pulled in and this funny little man came up to us-there was no way we could say no to his smiling face even if the campsite was horrible! Luckily ...

Cruising in Croatia

So we arrived in Split to kickoff our Sail Croatia experience. Getting off the bus whilst still dark is not the most pleasant experience. Was slightly chilly but not cold and there really isnt much to see. There was a crazy lady who kept on offering us a room ... was tempting but we persisted through. We got to see our first and probably only sunrise of our trip and then the warmth kicked in. Doubled with a coffee we were warmed and trying to keep the reminants of sleep at bay.

We ...

Croatia rocks!

Day 9 So, onwards and downwards! We head off for Split. Can't find (free) coast-road - only signs are for (paying) motorway. However, this turns out to be blessing when we later meet Brits who had taken 'scenic' route... only to find that it took them 5 hours to go 200k - and then bolted for m-way as soon as! With nearer 500k to go, we were glad of tolls (sic!). Or as glad as you can be when the terrain is as boring as Southern Croatia. 'S funny, when you look at it on the map, there's ...

... here and Turkey a little more. So, we decided on the middle of Croatia, Split, as a place to start our coastal adventure.

By this time we are really done with monuments, churches, etc, and ready for some beach time. Our overnight train ride is made better by the fact that we had a compartment to ourselves, so we were able to sleep somewhat, which is more than usual for an overnight bus trip. <br ...

Splitting up my travel time

... bus, so instead I took the 5:45 bus to Donji and got another ride from Sime. The next day, determined to win, I went to the bus station at 11 and asked for all the bus times for that day to Zemunik-Gornji. They told me there was one at 2:20 and one at 8:05. So I bought a ticket for the 2:20 bus, spent a half day in Zadar, and then caught that bus to Gonji. Later that day I was walking around with Sime and we saw a bus roll up at around 3:30 and ...

Trying Not to Fall Apart. Already!

... wait to get one). Despite the fact that I was double her age, I took her out and showed her the city. Later that night we fell in with some others at the hostel and had a nice dinner out, followed by an even bigger get-together back at the hostel. The young-uns all decided to play drinking games, so I opted instead to head out with 31-year-old Anna from California to help her search for kebabs. Anna loves kebabs. I then stumbled across a ...

Split up

Jim and Gina left us to go to their 5 star hotel - Rat and I had a quick walk to our guesthouse, then we walked the mile or so to meet the celebrius ones. Gina wanted an afternoon on pampering, but we managed to get Jim to come out and see the town, which after all is yet another UNESCO WH place. He almost had second thought after our kapachi (or wwhatever they are called) Finding food was difficult - it was ...

... of her late husband's handkerchiefs.] After a great night's sleep, we started our Tuesday off feeling very refreshed. After breakfast, we made a quick stop at an internet café and continued on to the Reichstag, the German capital building. We had planned to go to the top of the dome, but there was a very long line. While we were lamenting the wait and discussing our options, a tour guide overheard our discussion and told us that the wait was an hour. He then told us there was still ...
