... Staithes is where he started work - for the local grocer - and where he got a taste for things nautical by watching the coming and goings in the harbour. We have visited the place of his childhood, Great Ayton, where he went to school. His mother and various siblings are buried in the graveyard of the norman (11th century) church which we visited along with the museum in honour of the esteemed captain. However the big ...

Today was a very interesting day. From exploring Abbey Ruins, watching a Viking battle, walking along the beach and watching mad Englishmen swimming in freezing water, eating fish and chips to Nathan being offered to go outside for a fight by a drunken yobo!

The haddock was firm enough to eat in one piece, but you needed two hands because even cut in half, one piece was big and solid and heavy. What was good was the box it came in. We had dinner in a modern, trendy brasserie, rather than go traditional, but I did want seafood, and this place had a half-lobster for 12.95, which wasn't too bad. Plenty of time tomorrow for "the best fish and chips in the world." See you then.

... have been flocking ever since to bathe and drink the waters for health and medicinal purposes.

Its popularity has resulted in Harrogate being one of the most expensive places to live with many properties valued at 1 million or more. It has many beautiful gardens and we were impressed by this beautiful town.

Across the North York moors we drove, enjoying the many stone walls and green surroundings. Around lunchtime, ...
