Wachten op het vliegtuig...

A travel blog entry by romald

The start of a new adventure!

Helaas mochten ...

Amsterdam in 24 hours

A travel blog entry by ritawritatravel

Well, technically 12 hours - I got a lot of Amsterdam in today with a hop on hop off bus tour today as well as a canal ride in the evening. However, I think the best way to take in the city really would have been the walking tour. Alas, one of several things to add on the to do list next time I happen to be in this corner on the world.

The bus was nice in that you can't really get lost unless you wander too far, or decide to just ...

First footprints

... me for a while in an environment that is completely new and different. Despite of all the reasonability that was shouting off my ears, I went online and booked a ticket.

So, 3 september I will catch my flight to Nepal. For three months I will follow my feet guided by my heart and simply see where ever they will bring me. Late november I will move to Pokhara, the second capital of Nepal, where I will work and live with the children ...

Historical Traveler Reviews Steigenberger Airport Hotel Amsterdam Schiphol-Oost

    In the middle of nowhere

    from anonymous

I had booked this hotel on a promotional rate found on the internet. Value for money was great and the hotel is a very modern facility. I was, however, not at all prepared about the location of it. It is really in the middle of nowhere! Although it's advertised as an airport hotel, it's very far from the terminal. You have to take the bus for a ride of more than 10 minutes, and every time you want to leave the hotel (there is absolutely nothing around the hotel, no shop, no restaurant, nothing) you have to take the same bus ride, which gets quite annoying. Therefore I wouldn't go back to the Sofitel Dorint next time and chose a hotel closer to the airport or to the city.

    Thank you

    from anonymous

I have been in this hotel last night after reviewing the logs, thanks this hotel is amazing. Ask for 2 wake up calls, the bed is really comfortable! Also loved the bar, Wifi internet and open 24 hours a good solution for a serious jetlag

    Beds are too comfortable

    from notoftheworld

Overnighted in Amsterdam and stayed at the Dorint Sofitel Airport. The shuttle was convenient, check-in was quick. The rooms are well designed, very functional, quiet and comfortable. In fact, the bed was too comfortable, if there is such a thing. If you don't mind staying away from town, this hotel has everything you'll need. High speed internet in the rooms (fee) and free wi-fi in the lobby. Nice pool and gym. Would stay here again. Look on line for good rates. If using their airport shuttle, make sure you get on the right one. They have a dedicated shuttle for their hotel only.

    Fantastic hotel,great design,great rooms.

    from tomcat22

Stayed here for 1 night recently and was very impressed with this hotel. I agree with previous review re. the design of the hotel ..quite simply it's stunning. Rooms are cutting edge contemporary with loads of neat little design features like the way the lights cast a relaxing pattern above the mirror or the glass work desk. Swimming pool and spa are fantastic and the pool although smallish has a water jet you can swim against which is funky..I dont know who designed the hotel but if I ever win the lottery he/she will be designing my mansion !!

Hotel if right on the airport perimeter but there is no noise intrusion. Shuttle bus is good but only runs to midnight. One minor fault is the air con system, it is centralised and was not cool enough for my liking, 23 degrees was the coolest it got I believe. Overall a fantastic hotel and very good value for money, stay here and you wont be dissapointed.

P.S. If you need any more info feel free to email me.

    An Architectual Wonder!

    from anonymous

It's an architectual wonder. It will feel more like a five star plus, with a lesson in outstanding design. Everthing from the elevator tones, to the touch key room entry will amaze you.

The room are perfect, everything is of the highest quality and design, coffee and tea, the iron and board all pull out of the wall, drawer style. The entire entry and bath slide behind a movable wall for extra privacy and quiet. The bathroom will blow your mind, everthing is architectually perfect, from the granite to the Grohe fixtures and integrated hidden speakers to enjoy music while bathing.

Here you will clearly witness how Europe is 10 to 20 years ahead of North America in design. For those who think modern is cold, this will change your mind, the colours, textures and furnishings are soothing and inviting while demonstating clean and simple functionality.

The buffet breakfast is huge and neatly merchandised with beautiful lighting an signage. The spa and gym are also outstanding.

If you're flying through Amsterdam after a long haul, this hotel will relax and refresh, make it a point to stay here!

    Excellent Rooms

    from anonymous

Wonderful stay here. The rooms were wonderful, very clean and containing everything I needed. The only mildly negative comment is relating to the reception staff who were professional rather then friendly. They also provide a free shuttle bus to and from the hotel to the airport on a half hour basis. I would recommend this hotel to anyone visiting amsterdam.

This Hotel is well worth a visit

    from anonymous

My partner & I stayed at the Dorint sofitel for a weekend in April 04. The hotel is a fairly new building with all mod cons. There is an awesome leisure facility with pool, gym, sauna, steam room and modern equiptment. There is a coourtesy bus from the airport (note there are two hotels called 'Dorint' at the airport so make sure yu ask for the sofitel dorint before boarding the bus. We went to the wrong one by mistake at first and although we ended up paying a taxi instead of waiting for the next courtesy bus we were pleasantly surprised that the 'Dorint we'd booked was the second we saw and not the first. There is regular courtersey transport from the hotel to Amsterdam Centre (you need to book with reception, but there is no charge) drop off and pick up is outside Van Gough museum. The restaurants are very good value and one is open 24 hours. Food was great, varied choice for brfeakfast. We booked our trip as a package with Expedia and had a really good deal. Overall our stay at the dorint exceeded expectation, was enjoyable and relaxing. We loved the modern design, the fact that everything was so clean and the quality friendly service. Woud definately recommend to any one considering staying there. We will certainly be visiting again.

    Great place for a recharge!

    from anonymous

The hotel was simply outstanding: ultra-modern (I beleive that it was completed in Decenmber 2003), quiet, clean with good facilities - also has lots of car parking. The Sport Lounge was hopping from 5pm until 10pm (when we left) - I highly recommend having one of their stir-frys with noodles. The rooms were very modern with good beds fitted with duvets, the WC was spotless with a good shower head, lots of hot water and good pressure. The hotel/airport shuttle service runs every 30 mins to Schiphol Plaza and is free of charge. All in all, we were just staying there before heading back home...we were very well rested before our early flight back. We will stay at this hotel again.

    Weekend in Amsterdam

    from anonymous

We stayed at the Dorint Sofitel for a weekend break, the service was very good and we had good value for money. The 24-hour Sports and Media bar, was something you would not expect from a hotelbar, good atmosphere and staff. The hotel is easy accessible by shuttle and only 15 minutes away from the citycentre. The hotel also gives you the option to rent cars at a very good rate. Although they are small SMART cars. All in all we had an excellent stay and certainly did not pay too much.

    New Year In Amsterdam

    from anonymous

My friends and I stayed here for 4 nights over NewYear (29 Dec - 2 Jan). The hotel staff were friendly and helpfull. The rooms were spotless and the beds very comfortable. The breakfast buffet consisted of cold meats, cheeses, breads, pickled fish, juices, pancakes, waffles, eggs, bacon, burgers etc and was very nice. Only the gym, pool and solarium are open all day. The sauna, steam room, health bar, sun beds are only open early morning/evening. The hotel runs a free shuttle bus to (30 mins) and from (10mins) the airport via another hotel. Frequent trains run to Amsterdam central from the airport (3.2 euros). A taxi from the airport costs 20 euros, and from the centre of Amsterdam ~40 euros. There is a 24 hour sports bar with American Pool, darts & table football. The only bad points were: our room key cards had to be reactivated a few times which was a minor inconvenience. And they tried to charge us for the mini bar which we hadn't used. We paid £30 per night each for a twin room and booked it with Mytravellite uk. We felt this was very good value for money. I highly recomend this hotel if your considering staying near Schipol.
