... we got straight out of that dump and managed to land ourselves in another dump called Maracay, just not as populated. It was quite late so we jumped into a taxi and checked into the first hotel we could find called Hotel Bolivar aka "Casa de la Cocharoche." It was an absolute dive, Renton and the rest of trainspotting crew wouldnīt even stay in this place. Awful awful awful.

Had they been asking 5/6 usd we might have taken it and moved on very quickly, but even that room was 20 usd. So, we have decided to take the bus to Merida a place where lots of backpackers go to do extreme sports, mountain biking, hiking etc, and if the lp book is to be believed the hotel accommodation should be more reasonable. Quetzals (iridescent green and red birds) also frequented the area (Pierre's note: the white-tipped quetzal which can only be found here and sometimes in NE Colombia). Otherwise, there were guans, antpittas, antwrens, puffbirds, and the tiny mouse-like Caracas Tapaculo (another endemic for this trip).
