... la plus brutalement dépaysante que j’ai pu visiter (bienvenue en Asie du Sud-Est !), mais elle est tout aussi rassurante et familière avec ses bâtiments français, ses baguettes et ses pinards. Prendre des photos n’y a pas grand intérêt, puisque tout est en mouvement et l’ambiance est surtout auditive et olfactive. Je ne suis toutefois pas convaincu d’y remettre un jour les pieds. Et tout le monde m’a dit qu’à Saigon, c’est encore pire.

... when serving as a pilot. After a few days in Hanoi, we booked a boat tour and decided to head for the legendary Ha Long Bay, which translates to bay of descending dragons. We would return to Hanoi after our trip to Cat Ba island, but only briefly. In hindsight we should have spent more time here (like usual) but be were one a schedule and had lots of ground to cover. Hanoi is a wonderful city and we hope to return here one day.

... countryside and visit ethnic minority villages. The tour we have booked is for 3 nights - 2 of which are the night train there and back. We do 2 full days of trekking so should be interesting. This is the first time we have done any trekking on our travels and we are more than ready to do some. We are also very excited about the train, it is the first sleeper train we have tried since we got to Vietnam. Hopefully the tour will exceed our very low expectations of package ...

... silk was sold on the street, it was called "Silk Street", only the name was of course in Vietnamese so you wouldn't recognize it as that. Instead it is likely called Duong something or other. The funny thing about Vietnamese stores is that the ones selling the same types of wares are all lumped nearby one another and I saw the same practice in Cambodia. If you want shoes, you go to the part of town that sells shoes and then pick which store you want. ...
