... it was incredible how non descript a lot where. Like the Viper Room which is a night club, which was owned by Johnny Depp, that was made famous by River Pheonix overdosing there. It was a very small dark building in a small shopping centre. This type of over blown hype associated with a lot of these places raises your expectation of something more grandiose which they in real life aren't.

Overall though Los Angeles is very impressive with many ...

... has been quite an experience. Of course it's not for the faint hearted either. Now I know how our poor country folk feel when they drive into Auckland. Everything is whizzing by at 100 mile an hour ... which in the case of this place, is actually how fast they drive!! After the movie we headed back to the airport to give ourselves plenty of time to get there, as it turned out we got there in heaps of time so we have hunkered down waiting for boarding ...

This morning we had time to walk down to the San Diego Harbour area for a look around before checking out and walking to the Santa Fe Depot for our Amtrak train to Los Angeles. The harbour area is home to the Maritime Museum, the cruise ship wharf, harbour cruise companies and the USS Midway. We didn't go inside the Maritime Museum but from the wharf we could see a couple of old submarines (probably not as old as the Growler we saw ...

From LA to the Grand Canyon

    ... the Grand Canyon.

But first was the not-small matter of an eight-hour drive. When we told people back home our plan, we were met with disbelief and dubious remarks of "It’s a really long way, you know." Well, we said, we both enjoy driving, and it’s a pretty amazing route – and it really is. The scenery changes every half hour, and it doesn’t get boring. When you’re in an open top car, listening ...
