    Christmas was really nice. I knew when I left home in March that I would be away for Christmas, at the time I thought I'd be in the blazing heat and sunshine of southern Thailand.     ... nibbles on it. There was security, which I thought was a bit overkill, a man escorted us from the reception to the room, and the staff of the place were hovering around for the whole thing looking rather serious. We were given a Santa hat when we came in.

    ... therefore it's inhabitants must be. Ms Liang and Mr Yao said to me ages ago "London people, dress smartly, they're rich, nice". I just nodded along. It's the same with this over-used term "cultural difference". A host family can't just be a horrible family, the reason you don't get on with them isn't because of personality clashes, it's because of "cultural differences".
