We ended up taking a tuk tuk for the journey (again!) which set us back another tenner each but was a much more preferable option than slipping in vomit for a 4 hour journey. It all turned out for the best however, as on the way we spotted a HUGE SNACK slithering across the road (he was too quick for me to get a photo but was at least 6 foot long). ... strong swimmers, getting into the ocean is a lot fun, but can be dangerous due to the huge waves. However outside the beach bar Mambo's there is a calm spot where you can get into the sea a lot easier. (Baby Point)
There are also a lot of crows on the beach, so don't leave food lying about, your mostly like to come back to find it missing. I know I did.
Anyway on with my adventure.
So with the post Ella blues kicking in, myself and Lotte went for coffee ...
... dogs and the waves crashing on the shore. A breakfast of ginger tea and fresh fruit salad with 'curd' a homemade yogurt and grated coconut set us up for the day. We hit the beach, and decided to try our hands at 'surfing'. Well hired a board and tried to catch some waves! We were pretty hopeless but managed to almost get up - not bad for our first try! Arugam bay is massively popular with the surfing fraternity with waves fresh from Antarctica - we sat watching ...
... to meet Alan's dear friend,the principle of the after-school school 'Little Flowers' that provides extra tuition from 3-5 after the school day. Mr Guanapalam and his family were the epitome of the Sri Lankan people- so kind, generous and welcoming and run the little school for next to nothing in tiny wendy houses in a sandy plot of land next to their house! ... stop was. He said we had missed it by a few kilometres, so we grabbed our bags & jumped off the bus. It looked like we were in the dessert. It was amazingly dry & hot. There only seemed to be a few huts dotted around. We thought we were in for a very long hot walk, but this being Sri Lanka a tuk-tuk appeared from nowhere & drove us to a cheap guest house.
