Amy and I love Siem Reap but need to get away and see something new. We took a boat to Battambang from Siem Reap. The boat had wooden benches on the side and was packed with about 30 tourists. We all had seats....that was until we started picking up locals on the way. By the third stop some of the westerners began climbing onto the roof of the boat. When everybody was loaded in, if the boat listed hard to the left and my elbow was resting outside it would almost touch water. This was supposed...
Battambang, Cambodia amyl.emersonWe had an eventful journey to Battambang. We traveled from Palm Garden with a young Swiss couple, Philip and Susan, waiting by the roadside for the bus from Bangkok to the border. The 2 hour journey was straightforward until we got to the Thai side at Aranya Prathet. There there was a bit of a scrum as the tuk-tuk drivers vied for custom. P & S went off in one and we settled for what we thought was a trustworthy lady driver. We cruised sedately along, losing P & S in the distance, until we su...

Battambang, Cambodia mcmactravels... that run it.

All in all hand a better time in Battambang than I had anticipated but 1 full day is all you need. Although the initial warmth I felt towards this place quickly faded as I entered the dark period of my travels. Yes the worst has happened, my ipod has been messed up (long story!) and it has to be sent back home to be restored therefore I am sitting in an internet cafe in Phnom Penh worrying about the 6 hour border crossing to Vietnam I have ...
Battambang, Cambodia vanessa5694... bit of fun and went on a bamboo train also known by the locals as a nori.
The train is formed by two sets of railway wheels, a bamboo mat and a small cc engine. We watched excitedly as our train was put together then we loaded on the motorbikes and off we went. It was quite a bumpy run but we both loved it. About 20 minutes into our journey we came across another bamboo train that was ...

Battambang, Cambodia jslabbee... 10 miles an hour (this is not an exageration) and our chosen method of transport. You know in cartoons and very old Westerns you used to get those wooden platforms with a see-saw in the middle which slaves operated across great big bits of America (normally in super wide angle and panning out to show how far they're traveling)? Well in Cambodia, there's something similar except that like everything else it's operated by a motorbike engine and like everything ...
Battambang, Cambodia dolly_would...... beans and coconut milk inside a bit of bamboo. It is good takeaway food and environmentally friendly. Then a quick visit to a fishing village, and finally the bamboo train which runs on a single track between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. They take the lightest one off the rail if they met one coming in the other direction.

Zig zagged up the river, often reversing to turn corners. Eventually arrived at the town. Tied up at a shop and transferred by bus to a hotel in the town. It was classified as the best hotel in town, but its real rating was somewhere near comfortable.

Back to one ...
