Is your name Suzy?

Our first day in Cappadocia was a "free day"--free of a guided tour, that is, and free to roam about the region's many valleys of incredible white stone "fairy chimneys." Casey and I dropped our bags at the cave hotel (yes, cave hotel) and headed out for an adventure with Wei, a fellow American traveler we met in Istanbul. The narrow cliffs and stone pillars of the region are breath-taking from afar. One could spend hours perched atop one of the many view points in the area, mezmarized by the...

Cappadocia

Cappadocia was pretty amazing. I would liken it as a mixture of the Badlands and Arches National Monument, but entirely more phallic (Google Image the region to see what I´m talking about). Walked around several of the valleys around Göreme and snapped some awesome pics. Almost all of these spires have been carved out and lived in. My hostel was, in fact, a cave. Took a tour to an underground city that had been built by early Christians. Eight levels and 70 meters deep, it was enough to suppo...

Fairy Tales

The fairy chimneys of Cappadocia grace the front pages of glossy travel brochures for Turkey tourism, and rightly so. Any trip to Turkey without passing through Cappadocia is incomplete, and any trip with the area on the itinerary is sure to result in satisfied customers. We chose Goreme, one of the hubs of tourism in Cappadocia (pronounced Kap-a-dok-ia and meaning "land of the beautiful horses") for our home base. We arrived in Goreme in the wee small hours of the morning, and we quickly loc...

Tuesday, The Sultans Revenge

Well, it finally happened. I'm sick as a dawg. I think it was breakfast (French Toast) as an hour later, the rumblings and pains started. I don't think it was cooked through enough. Oh well. I had planned on doing some hiking in the hills before bus time but that plan went out the window, I stayed at the Pansion all day so I could be close for my many, many trips to the bathroom. I drank as much water as possible but had to start cutting back around 3PM as there is an eleven hour bus trip sta...

How a cat would not let Göreme sleep....

Flat land and Karawansery

We have to leave our paradise and we are getting off towards Istanbul. Marco is blessing us with water when we leave and the group (4 bikes again) is heading outside the Cappadocia area. We have a good road ahead that allows a constant travel speed of 90km/h. In Turkey the official speed limit for motorcycles is 70 km/h which is a joke, but on the other hand the police is letting people away when the stay below 90.

The land ...

always pretend you dont have any money

The final day before Damien's arrival was spent at weird little campsite on the sea of Marmara. We checked it out on foot and it just seemed to be scruffy little carpark, but when we tried to drive in, they tried to charge us 5 lira to get in. We only had 3, so they accepted that. An ice cream van pulled up next to us and ...

Eskisehir: Waiter, there's a Tomb in the Kitchen!

... amusement. We visited another Ottoman house, and met the occupant, the current resident in a line of family living in the house since 1717. The city's renovation project was one of exterior appearance only. The interiors were left to the occupants' well-worn discretionary comfort. Our last stop was the Osmanli Evi, or Osman House, a restored "mansion," now a restaurant. On the return to the tourism office we visited some of the commercial shops where meerschaum objects are made ...
