Travel Blogs by Travelers Who Stayed at the Star Chiang Mai

What Wat is What?

We've arrived!

We're staying at the Star Hotel in Chiang Mai, with a couple of PCs in reception for guests use. It's about 34c, but luckily there's an air con machine plugged in next to me. Down yonder is a Cola-Cola fridge full of ice-cold Singha and Chang beers... well, OK, maybe later.

It was quite a trip here from the UK. Nothing adventurous to report, it was just darn long. An uneventful flight from Gatwick took us to Dubai for a 2 hour stopover. Whereas most western air...

Krabi

Met Ele who'd just gotten in by train from Bangkok for breakfast. After a small airport bus mix-up, I was on my way to Krabi, where I stayed at the Starhouse. It's cheap, but it's also very unclean and shabby. Anyone staying in Krabi town, I recommend spending an extra 50-100B for a decent room in place of a stuffy refurbished garage. Krabi town really has nothing much to offer other than a waterfront walkway and a small park (the park is nice), so I decided to take off to Phi Phi the next day.

Road to Bangkok

Greetings from Bangkok! The official name of the city is like 160 letters long, so I'll stick with the common name. Ok, we left Penang Island in a minivan... And ended up in the travel hub for border traffic, Hat Yai, just long enough to catch a bus to Trang. We had originally decided to go to Trang when we thought we would catch the last few days of the Vegetarian Festival, characterized by not only feasts and celebrations of vegetarian food, but also acts of self-mutilation, usually the pie...

In the camp the Thai authorities don't allow the individual houses to have power, but we have put some solar lights into the boarding house, as the candles were a safety issue when the girls fell sleep studying etc. The solar lights are discreet, and can be packed away quickly.

Stephen also gave a generous donation to The Branch Foundation which was used ...

Campfires, Water sports and 2nd full moon

... night was the pool party, second night was the recovery and then we had pre full moon and real full moon! This time i decided to neon it up like everyone else..so we covered ourselves in paint and wore silly outfits! Unfortunately half way through we went back to our bungalow to use the toilet and discovered someone had covered our balcony in purple paint..it's a mystery as to who or why but we had to spend half an hour scrubbing before being able to go back to the party..which was ...

Orchids, Elephants and Trekking...Oh My!!!!

... cat as a meal...no not really but the pictures of the cat are pretty convining huh? It just laid there on the table and refused to move. We also stopped to take pictures of a cute little girl that caught a butterfly for us while holding a puppy in one hand. Pretty good huh? After she handed the butterfly to Jessie who promptly lost it she proceeded down to the water and attempted to bath the puppy who wasn't to happy about it. Our guide Chai came back to find us ...

Heading North - Chiang Mai

... and packing - we are off to Oz tomorrow) at the hotel. In the evening we explore a bit further afield - walking past the North of the Night Bazaar to "Warorot" market. We've no idea what it's all about and find that half is street-food and half is a flower market. There may be more to it during the day (driving past it earlier things looked a bit more "happening"). Dinner and a little last-minute shopping at the Night-Bazaar follows before we head back to the hotel.

Riding elephants and eating rats

... my belief that travel keeps age at bay and ensures one is ever adaptable to new situations and people, ready to learn from others and new experiences. As the night progressed we had an in-depth discussion of tribal culture and the influence of technology, tourism and development in the region. Sun also shared that he would marry in a month or so, mainly due to pressure from his parents. Being 31 and single is viewed as a real oddity in these parts, especially in ...

Chiang Mai (trekking & cooking)

After a 3 hour delay in Bangkok we flew North to Chiang Mai. Chiang Mai is very popular with tourists as it is a great place for trekking through the jungle with local guides. We arrived around 5, just as it was getting dark. There are no tuk-tuks around here so we have to splash out and take a real taxi. When in the taxi on the way to the city the driver offered to bring us wherever we wanted to go in the mountains and over to the golden triangle, where Burma, Laos and Thailand ...

Day 6 - Phitsanulok to Chiang Mai

... br>
When we got into our room we went straight to bed for some much needed sleep, and after a walk down to a falafel place for some lunch we just chilled out, in amongst the odd torential rain shower.

I'm hoping to catch the England v Israel European football qualifying game later tonight but unfortunately all the bars seem to have ...
