Maasai Market and Shrimp and Okra

Today's destination was the Maasai Market. It happens every Tuesday in a park in downtown Nairobi. Members of the Maasai tribe produce collectible goods such as figurines, art, etc. and sell them here in an open air market every week. Ed also needed to make a phone call to the states, and I wanted to go to a cyber-café to check email and update Travelpod. We sat around the living room for a bit in the morning, Margaret covered in the blanket that my Granny made for her. Also, the doily that g...

The Final Four Days

Where to start? I never expected to have such a wonderful time on safari. More sitting after Zanzibar felt like some sort of punishment, but man was I wrong!

We started out of Nairobi on Friday with one of our first stops being the East African Mission Orphanage. Seeing Jayne meet her sponsored child was unbelievable. How many people ever get that opportunity. It was a wonderful place where the children are very well cared for. I especially enjoyed seeing their smiles, their busy work ...

Bus to Nairobi

After a fairly nasty 15 hour bus journey overnight from Mwanza, which took us through the Kenyan border in the late afternoon, arrived in Nairobi at about half four in the morning. As we'd booked ourselves into a nice 5 star hotel for a few days before heading home, we decided not to pitch up in the middle of the night looking pretty smelly & dirty with our rucksacks... So, we checked into a half decent hotel opposite for a few hours to get some sleep instead. That proved to be a particul...

Nairobi: Karen Blixen Museum and Giraffe Center

We fly down overnight to Nairobi and arrive at The Stanley hotel for an a day of nice hotel life before 7 days straight of camping - and lots of animals and the like. We wander around Kenyatta Ave for a bit as the touts try and convince us to sign-up for their safaris and then enjoy and afternoon by the pool and a drink at the colonial-style bar (bit of history to this hotel, 1902 I believe is when it was originally up and running). The next day we barter (Shayaan does) with a cab and we get ...

sudanese vet

I was warned about scam artists in Nairobi, and every time I venture onto Jomo Kenyatta Ave, especially near the Stanley Hotel, I run into at least one. Twice I've talked to one. The first one started with "Remember me? From your hotel, I was at the door when you checked in." Then offered to show me where the internet was, so I followed him for a couple of blocks. After we reached the internet I turned down his request to help him push his car, then to help him with petrol money, and naturall...

... someone some powers and they will abuse them. Bin Laden has won as we are all completely paranoid and are spending an unbelievable amount of money on so called security. Ho I forgot that if you fly to Africa the gate is about 500km from the plane and you have to take the bus to embark. The flight was all right. We arrived late at around 9pm and after the usual paper work we reached the Fairview.

Two for one day!

... draped over their shoulders, huge, beaded earrings and headdresses, necklaces that are really neck cuffs, and the always present, stick in hand. Apparently red is for the cows blood, blue for the sky which they came from, green for the earth, black for the people. It's crazy how far these people take their animals daily to graze and find water. At Masai Mara we unloaded our stuff into our luxurious tent (seriously, we got a free upgrade for some reason to a tent with...a flushing ...

First full day in Kenya!

... other goods, which they sell for a profit.  Some of the women could barely move and were expected to die any minute, but now they are strong and healthy enough to dance and sing songs of praise with us…truly an inspiration.  A lot of them told us that they were never expecting to live to see the year 2009, but now they all have so much hope for the future.  A proud grandmother named Everline even told us she now has the hope of being alive to meet her great ...

Kibera and the Makina Clinic

... to Kibera. When we got to the Makina clinic, Andrew Otieno, the man who runs it, gave us a tour and then set us up with two men- Ramtu and Grey- to talk us through Kibera and tell us about it. It was amazing! I have seen slums in movies, but it is not the same as walking through it. Andrew was telling us there are 1.5 million people in 2.5 square kilometers in Kibera, and I believe it! It is so crowded, and it goes on forever! We must have walked for 2 hours and Grey said ...

We need to demand change from our leadership and hold them accountable for their actions and promises. We need to remember that our fight against poverty, unemployment, homelessness, lack of healthcare and education does not start and stop with the US. It is in our best interest to make sure the fight is global, unite ...
