Today's destination was the Maasai Market. It happens every Tuesday in a park in downtown Nairobi. Members of the Maasai tribe produce collectible goods such as figurines, art, etc. and sell them here in an open air market every week. Ed also needed to make a phone call to the states, and I wanted to go to a cyber-café to check email and update Travelpod. We sat around the living room for a bit in the morning, Margaret covered in the blanket that my Granny made for her. Also, the doily that g...
Nairobi, Kenya aaronjsmith Where to start? I never expected to have such a wonderful time on safari. More sitting after Zanzibar felt like some sort of punishment, but man was I wrong!
We started out of Nairobi on Friday with one of our first stops being the East African Mission Orphanage. Seeing Jayne meet her sponsored child was unbelievable. How many people ever get that opportunity. It was a wonderful place where the children are very well cared for. I especially enjoyed seeing their smiles, their busy work ...
After a fairly nasty 15 hour bus journey overnight from Mwanza, which took us through the Kenyan border in the late afternoon, arrived in Nairobi at about half four in the morning. As we'd booked ourselves into a nice 5 star hotel for a few days before heading home, we decided not to pitch up in the middle of the night looking pretty smelly & dirty with our rucksacks... So, we checked into a half decent hotel opposite for a few hours to get some sleep instead. That proved to be a particul...
Nairobi, Kenya minijumboontourWe fly down overnight to Nairobi and arrive at The Stanley hotel for an a day of nice hotel life before 7 days straight of camping - and lots of animals and the like. We wander around Kenyatta Ave for a bit as the touts try and convince us to sign-up for their safaris and then enjoy and afternoon by the pool and a drink at the colonial-style bar (bit of history to this hotel, 1902 I believe is when it was originally up and running). The next day we barter (Shayaan does) with a cab and we get ...
Nairobi, Kenya pjandshayuI was warned about scam artists in Nairobi, and every time I venture onto Jomo Kenyatta Ave, especially near the Stanley Hotel, I run into at least one. Twice I've talked to one. The first one started with "Remember me? From your hotel, I was at the door when you checked in." Then offered to show me where the internet was, so I followed him for a couple of blocks. After we reached the internet I turned down his request to help him push his car, then to help him with petrol money, and naturall...

... gun and throwing grenades before the bomb went off. Thus drawing a lot of people to the windows to see what the noise was all about. Then they had glass blown in their face. Poor people! After the Memorial I went and ate some lunch. Nothing special. Then I found a place for a card reader that would work for me. Score! I walked around a bit more and started to turn toward my hotel when a guy casually asked how I was doing. I usually just say "good thanks ...

Nairobi, Kenya boydandrose... thank you honney!; Kath and her large glass of wine at the airport to help steady my nerves, your trekking out to Gatwick with me was much appreciated; to work folks who contributed to my itunes gift vouchers - genious present (Vicky P idea no doubt!) and very generous, thanks; to my godparents Dave and Judith for a going away/birthday meal in France; to Vicki G for the hand sanitiser - it's the best thing I've brought with me by a long way.
Nairobi, Kenya jojoportobello... as expected, due to a major improvement of roads in Sudan! The safety standard remains to be moderate dangerous (as usual for 3rd world countries) and supposed to be not a major issue considering all main precautions.

The only part beeing a pain in the ass remains the infamous "Bonebreaker-Highway" from Isiolo to bordertown Moyale. A 500km long shocker-rocker. With a little help of our lord of the wheels, that might be done in 2 or 3 days. Don't ...
Nairobi, Nairobi Area, Kenya pajas... up from my cold, so I took a little stroll down the street to the local chemist and got a packet of sinus meds. Apparently my body is not a huge fan of pseudoephedrine (used as a decongestant, also used by some to make meth). I’ll try to make this story as short as possible - I took one of the pills before dinner and by the time we’d finished eating I could feel my heart pounding like crazy. Fortunately we had our drug book with us and I knew that increased ...
