Oh good, more mist

Day 20 - To get into Hong Kong we had to get off the sleeper train in Shenzen and pass through two passport controls; one to leave China, the other to enter Hong Kong and then catch another train for 40 minutes to Mongkok. The difference between the Mainland and Hong Kong is quite remarkable. Despite driving on the left, the traffic is similar to England in that the traffic lights actually mean something! In addition, the people are more polite and generally speak english, plus spitting and s...

Hong Kong

We left Hanoi and got a taxi to the airport. Our flight was due to set off at just before midday. I think we were both really glad that we'd decided to fly rather than negotiating our way through China overland. Also I think we were both ready to leave Vietnam and see somewhere new. The flight went smoothly and we arrived in Hong Kong in the early afternoon. We had pre-booked a room a quite a nice hotel (a bit of luxury to end the trip) and we caught a bus from the airport there. By this stag...

Hong Kong and Paris

Awesome trip to two vastly different cities. Paris seemed almost empty after the noise and bustle of HK. Excellent shopping in HK if you love jewellery. There is nothing like Paris in the springtime - beautiful. Great food, sights and museums.

hong kong & beyond

So after a 2 hour flight delay in Melbourne we finally left for Hong Kong. Upon arrival we met with our bus driver who talked himself out of getting arrested for loitering! when we got to the Stanford Hotel in Mongkok we were so tired that we went straight to bed! The next morning, we were pretty cut to find that market didnt open until midday so instead we found a Maccas for brekkie then jumped on the train to central Hong Kong before coming back to Mongkok to make our way to the airport. Hong Kong Day 1 (15th Sep 2006, Fri)

Day 1, Hong Kong Knocked off from work around 12noon and met up wif Alf at Buona Vista MRT to head for Changi Airport. Was concerned about whether to preceed with the trip, because there was a 3.5 scale earthquake off Hong Kong the previous night. And morever, the weather forcasted for the next 4 days are all showers with thunders. :( So anyways, we reached the airport around 1:20pm and proceeded to check-in at the Jetstar counter at Row 4. And then, we entered the departure hall and found a ...

Unfortunately, Hong Kong rates as my least favourite destination of my trip so far (mum... I'm so glad you didn't come... you would probably be disappointed like I am). Even though Boris and other people I've met have made for an enjoyable time, I cannot recommend Hong Kong as a tourist desintation (ESPECIALLY FOR BACKPACKERS)... not in March anyway. The weather has been s * * * every day this week so I have not been able to even visit Victoria Peak. I'm very disappointed... and the weather h...

A Nice Surprise

from kob
I had only one night in Hong Kong and arrived at 7am and left the next day at 4pm.

The room was a double for $800HK (150AUD) and they let me check in when I arrived and had a late check out as well. Incredible value and service. I booked over the internet and did not have to pay a deposit. I also used their shuttle bus service which was a brand new mostly empty luxury bus. It was easy to find and dropped me to the door and the driver brought my bags in.

The room had a big TV, decent bathroom, clean and good A/C that I could control. They had wireless internet that you paid $15HK for one hour. I was on a non smoking floor and there was not a hint of smoke.

When I missed my shuttle bus back to the airport, the staff were sweetly concerned and arranged a special price taxi to take me. This turned out to be a luxury brand new van thing with again brilliant A/C loads of room and a nice driver who immediately offered me a bottle of water when we took off.

The area the hotel is located is great for the bargain shopper. Their are markets and cheap shops everywhere you walk. You are about five shops from a 7/11. and 2 or 3 blocks from Nathan Road and the bus down to the Star Ferry. However, there is so much around the hotel area in Mong Kok, I found I was better off shopping there.

The only down side is that though the hotel looks flash and the room nice it does look out over unnatractive highrise flats. when you know you are so close to a harbour and great citylight views it is kind of frustrating - but hey, I guess that is why it is so cheap.

I would happily stay there again.

Great Kowloon location

from Judith Whicker
We stayed at this hotel in June 2005 at the end of our trip to Asia. We had stayed in some good hotels in some great places, so the Stanford had a lot to compete with. Although it's not a luxury hotel, we enjoyed staying there and would certainly consider staying there again if/when we go back to Hong Kong.

The location is great if you want to explore the night markets around Nathan Road, it is literally in the thick of things. We couldn't hear any traffic noises in our room, but we could hear some of the more gregarious other residents who occasionally gathered in the corridor near the elevators! If you want to see more of HK island, maybe Kowloon is not the best location, but there are great transport links. Also, we walked up and down Nathan Road a few times to see the sights, and it isn't too far.

The room was quite small, but in Hong Kong, space really is at a premium! It had all the things you need, and when you visit a city, who wants to stay in their room? The staff were friendly and helpful. The breakfast was varied, with a good choice of food and drinks.

Overall, good value for money in a great Kowloon location.

Fantastic tourist hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
OK - this is only a 2* hotel. The Ritz Carlton it isn't! We stayed here for 4 nights on a tour of Asia. Brilliantly located, friendly staff, clean, safe and secure. If you want to see HK on a reasonable budget then this is the place for you. I work in HK on business and the cost of 1 night at the JW Marriott is the same as 3 nights in this hotel.

You won't have any problems here.

Perfect location for tourist

If given a chance to go back to HONGKONG, I would love to go back to Stanford hotel again&again. Its very acesible to the shopping areas,7-11 and k-mart store,of course NIGHT MARKETS like THE LADIES MARKET is 2 blocks away from the hotel,no need to ride a taxi, near the restaurant especially those PINOYS who loves to eat at YOSHINOYA believe me its just beside the hotel,Mcdonalds is also beside for those tourist who are bringing their children with them,a church nearby and MRT station. The hotel is nice, clean and has friendly staffs. Everything you need is just beside the corner.

Adequate Surprise

We lost our way from Mong Kok MTR to this hotel when we first arrived. Went the other direction - caught up by all the sights and sounds of the bustling city. We even missed a very prominently placed direction card pointing to our hotel in the MTR! The walk from the MTR to the hotel should not take more than 5 minutes, take exit E2. The hotel is also pretty close to the tunnel that connects Hong Kong island and Kowloon, which means cabbing, when you are really tired from all the shopping, would not cost you a bomb. Be prepared to have HK$20 added to your fare for the toll. Additionally, the hotel provides shuttle buses to the airport at $120 per person, alternatively, if you are in a group of 3 or 4, with lots of luggage, you could rent a van to bring you there at $400. The rooms are really not that small (it lacked walking space) - we spent most of our time sprawled on the bed anyway. The inght shift receptionist looked like a hong kong singer from one angle and a malaysian singer from the other - he had a great smile and was really helpful! The furnishings were reasonably clean and well stocked of the expected.

Lovely hotel for great price

from A TripAdvisor Member
We have just spent a week in the Stanford hotel on bed and breakfast basis and couldn't fault it. Our room wasn't the biggest but for a hotel in Hong Kong was more than acceptable. The hotel has a beautiful reception and rooms are comfortably decorated and very clean. We had our sheets changed daily. The hotel is in an ideal location. It is near the main tourist areas but not too near - away from tacky bits. There are loads of nice places to eat nearby and only 5 mins to nearest subway station. If we go back to HK (prob will) we would stay hear again!

Enjoyed the Stanford

from GrahamNI
Stayed here twice and found it to be well sited and fun to be there. Room was fine, everything worked and it was clean and well cared for.

Great location, near to markets and to Nathan Road.

Restaurants are also nearby, all in all, no problems and very reasonable to stay at.

Will stay again this year if possible.

Cheap Cheerful and Ideal Location

from wisemj
We have now stayed here twice. Not in the most salubrious of surroundings but it is in an excellent location for the markets and underground. Yes the rooms are small but they were clean and adequate - lets face it you are out most of the day. Breakfast was reasonable and the staff helpful. It is cheap and cheerful.

Good location, small room

from heroic_gal
The room was clean enough, but tiny. Location was good - a couple of blocks away from the Ladies' Market.

Moderate...a little scarry..good location though

from ariesgal
For those of you who are used to the U.S. standard of cleanliness, do NOT live here....mildew on walls, cracks, mirrors, everywhere....smells...small...janitors are not professional. Broken toilets, shower heads, not enough lighting in bathrooms... Great view though since it's surrounded by shorter buildings. 1 great thing: you can't beat the location -- in the heart of the best shopping area!
