Comfortable rooms, a bit sleepy, could use upgrades in the rooms. Concierge and front desk people are wonderful, friendly and made the stay. Dining in the city is very expensive and sometimes your expectations of food presentations can be disappointing. Kabuki Restaurant in hotel disappointed me. I just didnt feel sophisticated having someone throw shrimp at me to try to grab with my well as throw the rice bowl at me to try to catch. Sure didnt want to ruin my clothing by missing.

We only stayed one night at the Stamford Plaza and it was okay for our very short visit. Would not rave about the hotel but the staff were very friendly and the room was more than adequate, if a little dated and the bathroom was nice and big. Certainly, would have no problem coming back to this hotel but compared to some of the more modern hotels, it is showing signs of age.

      Great view - terrible service

We stayed here when it had just opened and had a beautiful clean room with great views of the harbour BUT we had so many problems with the service. We put it down to 'teething' problems but just read some of the recent reviews and seems that things have not improved!

So what happened to us?! 1) Oven caught fire when we first used it as the cardboard packaging had not been removed 2) Remote control did not work and had to request batteries four times before they eventually arrived 3) Complaints about lack of vegetarian options on room service & breakfast menu were ignored 4) On checking out, we asked the concierge to collect our bags from the room. We had to wait 45 minutes with an understanding taxi driver (!), with repeated reminders to the front desk, before they arrived.

The staff's attitude was indifferent and apathetic at all times. And our letter of complaint was completely ignored.

Also, a pregnant friend who also stayed there had an even worse experience. She was asleep in bed one evening when some people entered her room! They were hotel customers who had been given the keys to her already booked room!

Fantastic hotel, excellent service! A true 5* gem!

I booked the Stamford last minute and was slightly worried, as i had stayed in the Mercure Windsor on my previous visit and wasn't impressed. I went through and got a great deal (NZ$180) and that included breakfast each morning!

I arrived at the hotel and the concierge was very helpful and friendly.

I arrived in my room and although the view wasn't great, it was very large and had a spectacular bathroom. The room service was excellent and the bed comfy, i had no complaints at all, food great-service great-location great, will def stay there on my next visit.

      **Well appointed & luxurious**

I found the Stamford Plaza auckland wonderful.

First impression i got was from the grand entrance, lobby bar and concierge which were all impressive and staff were friendly and quick to help.

The rooms were great with king singles that can can be pushed together and the bathrooms big and spacious with fluffy robes aswell!

Location is great, 1 block from the main street near shops and the waterfront.. Prices in the hotel were expensive but you expect that when staying anywhere 5 star. And yes the staff gave us 2 for 1 drink vouchers upon arrival..

      I'd definately recommend this one!

      Not very impressed!

I was booked into the Stamford Plaza as part of a group. The lobby is very grand and inviting. I found that the front desk staff were very nice and as helpful as possible for directions or recommendations.

The rooms themselves were a good size with an outstanding arrangement for the bath and shower. On the down side, they are long overdue for renovations in both the rooms and hallways. The carpets and fixtures are tired.

My biggest complaint was with management's handling of noise. A huge party went on in the room next to mine where there was shouting and loud music going on until well past midnight. Given that I had arrived that day from an overseas flight, I was not in the mood to join in.

Unsure of the reception I would get from a bunch of drunks, I called the front desk to ask if they could get the party toned down. This was tried on three separate occasions, but only by telephone. I asked to speak to the duty manager to get action. No one from the hotel even came upstairs.

The next morning, there was literally thousands of dollars of very expensive champagne (10+ bottles of Veuve Clicquot) in the hallway. I took pictures of this to show management. I was also very sure to rattle around my room as best I could at 7 am...

I didn't receive any calls from management to discuss the situation. I asked at the front desk the next morning if there was a report on file - there was none. I asked if a manager could call me to discuss my dissatisfaction. No attempts were made to contact me.

On the whole - clean hotel in need of renovation, bad customer relations policy. They won't get my business again, nor should they get yours!

      Great service

We arrived at the Stamford around 11pm after a long journey and found the staff to be amazing. Our room was excellent and had a lovely deep bath with ample hot water. We met Jan (USA/Kiwi) at the Cigar Bar and had a hot chocolate - thanks to the hotel for the 50% discount coupon. The Stamford seems to listen to their customers - offering discount phone calls and half price mini bar. We stayed another night before our departure and have to say that this hotel is faultless - from the chaps in red coats who collect your luggage in the freezing night and deliver to your room right thru to the reception girls and bar staff. We would definately stay at the Stamford Plaza again.

      Liked the Stamford

I thought that the Stamford was a very nice hotel. All the facilities were clean and worked. So you paid nearly NZ$6 (just over ?2) a night to use the safe but I have been charged more elsewhere and it is not compulsory. Separate bathroom and toilet were good. Bath robes were heavenly.Good selection of TV channels although it would have been nice to have BBC World. Excellent position near the waterfront. Had the lamb one evening in the restaurant which was to die for.I wouldn't hesitate in recommending this hotel to anyone.

      5 Star Hotel?

A few days ago I thought I'd surprise my boyfriend by taking him to stay at the Stamford Plaza for his birthday - what a mistake. The first problem occurred within about 10 minutes (that's about how long I had to stand in line at the reservations desk) of my arrival. The clerk was extremely unhelpful, didn't tell me anything about the hotel, or the package I had booked, let alone give me any directions to my room.

After I had trapsed around the hotel searching for my room I went to collect my boyfriend. When we returned to our room there was a message waiting requesting that I go down to reception because the clerk had "forgotten" to take a copy of my ID. So I did that, and seeing as I ended up wasting about 30 mins of my visit due to an incompetent clerk I thought I'd check about what was included in my package, and was told that the deal included the room and breakfast in the restaurant. A while later my boyfriend called reception to check whether we could have our breakfast in our room, and what told (by the SAME clerk) that our package didn't include breakfast afterall. (why do they call it a package if its only the room?). She then told him that we could change to a different package that did include breakfast, for a slightly higher price, but he told her he'd need to check with me and call back.

So I phoned back and as it happens the lady had already changed the package, without having been given the "go-ahead". I thought that was highly unreasonable. as they had put extra charges onto my account without my permission. When I told her what i thought of that she gave me a rude "well do you want breakfast or not?"!! I'd long given up on the 5 star service factor, when we noticed all the problems in our room. The built-in radio didn't work, unless you count the occasional high-pitched screech coming through the speakers whenever a cell phone rang in the place. Reception on the TV was absolutely appalling, barely watchable. Now onto the bedsheets. Gross. One of the sheets had holes and bloodstains. The worst part was the stains looked fairly fresh, like the sheets hadn't been washed. I was disgusted. Also, their "king-size" beds, are 2 single beds pushed together. How romantic.

Not!! I would not recommend this hotel to my worst enemy. I've already sent my letter of complaint. If you're in the area and want to stay in a 5 star hotel, DO NOT visit the Stamford.

Not as good as it looks

Boy, was I disappointed in this hotel AND the Sir Stamford Double Bay in Sydney (see review there as well). I had such high hopes for these hotels and was looking forward to my five-star vacation down under. Not quite.

The Stamford Plaza Auckland is in a great location, very near the ocean, great for catching a ferry or the Explorer Bus or just for walking around the city (you can easily walk to the Skytower, etc.). It looks great and has a very impressive lobby. The room also looked fabulous--spacious, nice-looking woodwork, and a gorgeous marble bathroom with a glass-enclosed shower.

But looks can be deceiving. First, I don't think they do the laundry. I asked for an extra blanket and received one with a large brown stain on it, a stain that I don't think was caused by a coffee spill. Can you imagine? The sheets had ominous dark stains, too. Finally, one of the two bathrobes in my room stank of aftershave. It was really horrifying--in any hotel, never mind one that claims five stars!

Then there is the matter of the in-room safe. They provide one, but they CHARGE you almost NZ$6.00/day (after adding the taxes). Similarly, there is no in-room ethernet hookup; if you want in-room Internet access, you have to use their lame TV access, which can't access secure sites (so, hello, you can't even check your e-mail with it). If you want a modem adaptor for your laptop they'll charge you $10/day PLUS all the phone charges.

Also, on the phone charges, it said in the guest book that the front desk would "be happy" to help with arrangements at any other Stamford hotels. So I called and asked if they could confirm my reservations in Sydney for the next night. They forwarded my call...and then charged me $2.00 for it! When I protested, they took the charge off but then were rather condescending, saying that they didn't have a central reservation system. I just as condescendingly informed them that perhaps they should then redo their guest book, because it was clearly misleading. *Sigh*

This place looks like a five-star hotel on the outside, but they fail woefully in the details. I wouldn't stay there again if you paid me; I'll go somewhere with clean sheets and Internet access, thanks.

      Mislead, overcharged and disappointed

I was so disappointed with the Stamford. We chose to go to a 5* hotel expecting great service. We were sadly disappointed. Many of the staff were rude and unhelpful. Service was poor. There were even holes in the bed sheets! And upon check out we were charged at full price, not the special that had been promised at the time of booking. The charges were disputed and removed from the bill. Then 5 days later we recieved a bill the overcharged items and told they had already been charged to my credit card. In the situation we should have been called and advised. I am now waiting for the letter writer to return my call to explain the situation. If you want 5* service dont go to the Stamford Plaza Auckalnd!

A motel at 5 star prices

this was the worst hotel i have ever stayed in remember a sleeping bag while you wait on your room. avoid the stamford at all costs.

After an early start from KeriKeri we drive the four hours to Auckland. We have to drop off the hire car first, then get a taxi to the hotel. The drive went well with no hick ups on the way. Dropped car off and got a taxi to the Stamford Hotel. The location of the hotel was perfect, however, the hotel itself is a little dated. We have a very early …
