After work I drove up to Chester and found a pub near the railway station to wait for Julie who was on her way from Birmingham. After taking a few quid out of the quiz machine (mostly on 'Beat the Landlord') we set off for the A55, the fast way across the top of Wales. People old enough to remember when this road was all single-carriageway will bless the modern version. I remember spending 3 hours travelling about 20 miles one hot summer's day in the mid-1980s.

... London. Transfers and we end up in Watford, where David picks us up to spend the last night at his place before a noon departure Saturday from Heathrow. We were able to talk our way past the gatekeeper on the Tube using our rail pass.
