Today was our first (and only) day without cycling. After a late breakfast we set about the job of sight seeing in Ely. It is a lovely city with much to explore and we wiled away most of the day walking about the city and paying homage at Cromwell's House and also visiting the Ely museum.

... bone dry unless it is a sou'wester they would be rather too hot to wear on a bike.

Today's route would take us across the fens to the two 'famous drainage ditches that were created in the 1650's to drain the fens so that the land could be used as agricultural land - much to the annoyance of the fen-landers.

The first hour was lashing rain and high winds, but with the initial windy route, we were sometimes the beneficiaries ...

... Ouse. we now started to get an appreciation of the vast flat fens where you can see for 20+ miles in each direction.

Our final stop for the day was a Downham Market at a very nice B&B called The Dials. It was built in 1750 and we were give a lovely room in the loft of the house with old beams and tiny windows. The town itself is not the prettiest but there is was one restaurant that had rave reviews called Palmers. ...
